    Broody old hen

8 weeks ago I bought a mama hen with 12 chicks which she adopted and hatched. Mama is a 5 year old silkie orp x and has been adopting eggs for years. She has just weaned her chicks and is sitting in the coop squaking at any hen or chick that comes near and won't let them inside. I'm guessing...

Mixed aged pullets - grower or layer?

Awesome - that makes sense! I'll give them crushed egg shells until I get oyster shells! I'll have a mixed flock for at least another 4 months so that makes sense. Thanks :)

Thanks! Now to find oyster shells in my area.... Also would you say I need to get them grit if they are free ranging?

Mixed aged pullets - grower or layer?

I have 10 pullets aged between 11-21 weeks. And a 5 yo mama hen with 12 x 3 week old chicks. They all free range with loads of grass, bush, dirt and wormy compost. Currently I feed the 10 pullets grower pellets in the morning and scraps in the afternoon. They also have a nozzle feeder with...

How to introduce a new mama hen and chicks to an existing flock

I just purchased a mama hen (5yo silkie/Orpington cross) and her 12 adopted chicks (6 days old). I have an existing flock of 10 pullets (4 wynadottes, 4 leghorn/light Sussex and 2 orpingtons), ages ranging between 9-17 weeks old) all free ranging. I've put the mama and chicks in a separate shed...

When to mix younger pullers with older pullers

I have 4 cross breed 18 week old pullets and 4 wynadotte 16 week old pullets who have been in the same coop and free ranging for about 3 weeks. They get along fine. I have 2 x 9 week old orpingtons that have been seperated by wire in the run for about 2 weeks now - at night I've been putting...

Mixed breed 16 week old - confused on gender.

I agree. I'm just thinking the white may be a roo as tail feathers and saddle feathers (hard to see in pic) are pointy and not well defined. Also the wattle and comb seem rather large? Hmmm....

Mixed breed 16 week old - confused on gender.

This one I'm confused about - tail and body shape seems pullet(y). Redness of comb and pointy neck feathers confuse me...Also, what breed would you say it is???

I'm almost positive this is a cockerel. Do you agree?

Mixed breed 16 week old - confused on gender.

No crowing yet - I though that wasn't until at least 20+ weeks. They're all very skittish and yell like crazy when picked up, takes some time to calm them down.

Mixed breed 16 week old - confused on gender.

Thanks! So it's these 4. Pretty sure the white and grey tall one with darker tail is a roo as is the all white one. Also pretty sure the blue/grey one is a hen. Confused as to the brown one?? Neck feathers are pointy but tail seems rounded but the comb is very red....what do you think?? Also the...
