Thank you for all the replies! I stayed in denial for quite awhile bc everyone I knew, even a guy who owns chickens said it was a hen. Even after he started crowing I explained to my husband that some hens do crow and kept thinking it was a hen myself. His tail feathers have grown even more this...
Well I guess I better stop feeding him hen food then! I began feeding him hen food in preparation to see some eggs soon but that's clearly not gonna happen haha
Awww bummer. So no chance it's just a really dominant hen? It's the only chicken I have so I thought maybe that's why it does the egg song and now crows. I was waiting to see if the tail begins to grow longer and if spurs come in but I wasn'the sure how long that might take.
Ive had this chicken since it was roughly a month old. It is turning 5 months old this week. Everyone kept saying it was a hen but Im not so sure. It does sing the egg song but does not lay eggs. It now crows loudly in the morning and occasionally through the day. Ive read that hens can crow but...
Thank you Kathy! You just made my life way easier. I went looking for a local branch for agriculture and was having a hard time finding any useful info at all. I'll check out both places you provided. I know the more info I have about Nova, the better.
Well, I only have one bird. She is just a...
Thanks for all the excellent info everyone. I think as Kathy said it would be wise to get her tested for MG or whatever respiratory issues she may have. I'll look into finding a good avian or livestock vet. So far this week I have just kept an eye on her and have waited to see if it got worse...
Hi there, I am new to chickens but have learned a great deal about keeping them so far thanks to BYC. Some background info to begin.... A friend of mine found a small chick out wandering the streets and long story short, she is now my pet. When she was first given to me last month I noticed she...
Ok. I will go and get some Tylan for her then. Its so frustrating because she seemed to improve at first with the Duramycin. Her breathing wasn't gurgle-y like it has become and now I think she is also coughing or sneezing from time to time. She doesn't gurgle all the time but you can hear...
The photos were helpful to see. My chick has never had the foamy eye part though. Her eyes got noticeably watery and looked like a water bubble until it dripped down her face or I wiped it away. Also, all discharge has remained clear too. Does that symptom mean anything specific or help you know...
Thank you for the info. I will probably try the Tylan but now I'm not sure what to do at all. Will this illness subside on its own? Let me explain..... I got in touch with a chicken ranch in my area. They have been hatching and raising chickens for 25 years. I thought it would be good to call...
I have a baby chick that is sick with some sort of URI. Symptoms began with watery eyes and discharge from her nostrils. She also would open and close her mouth as if she had trouble breathing. I started her on tetracycline in her water 4 days ago. At first, she seemed to improve with eyes...
Does that mean she will be big? From what I understand "bantam" means smaller and then there's the classification of "large" which is just what it sounds like.
Update: I was able to get some better lighting and managed to remove some "chicken boogers" from her beak with a Qtip. I got one side completely clear but the other side still has a tiny bit of gunk but is partially cleared out. I don't think her eyes are watering further from what I can tell...
Hi, I'm completely new to chickens and unexpectedly obtained this little chick. Any info on what kind she might be would be great! I tried to tell myself by comparing photos but I really stink at it so far lol. I'm still learning alot of new things about chickens :)
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I did check out the learning center first thing when I got Nova on Monday. It was really helpful because I went from no chicken knowledge at all to....I have a chick now, what do I do? Hehe. I'll def check out the house chickens section, I haven't seen that...
