Integration- day one went so well, how long do I wait?

thanks for your input! I do have one that escaped into the big girls side and they were happily chickening together without drama but I reseparated as soon as I realized what had happened. And last night, one baby snuck between temp dividers and netting, and was on the roost with the old hens...

Integration- day one went so well, how long do I wait?

I have 5 littles that have completed quarantine. Two are 4 mos old, the other 3 are just 3 months. They were purchased from the same pen of about 30 babies and quarantined together for the past 5 weeks. The oldest hens are now both crowing (yikes) but they are still pretty civilized. I...

Considering my first attempts at culling roosters

have you considered getting them processed by someone professional? (or experienced?) Same outcome, but you don't have to do it personally. There would be a cost involved, but it would be $$ not an emotional cost.

Need help with integration plan- 5 new youngsters, 2 geriatric hens

The old girls are not feeble-- and it will be their "home turf" so I don't expect anything awful from them. One is still a bit sassy, the other is a sweet gentle soul. I think keeping the new 5 in a group makes sense. And I'm grateful that I have so much room! 140ish square foot coop, and...

Need help with integration plan- 5 new youngsters, 2 geriatric hens

Yes, they were all raised together and have quarantined together. The first few days there were a couple stand offs, but no pecking. I figure they were just reworking pecking order for the smaller subset of what had been a group of 25-30. thank you so much

Getting rid of my rooster (guilt)

One of my first day old pullets grew up to be a BIG EE roo. He was always distant, but as he matured became hostile. I had to carry a stick to go in the run after he drew blood on my legs. One of my hens hatched 3 eggs-- all roos and all aggressive at a very young age. I struggled a lot, but...

Need help with integration plan- 5 new youngsters, 2 geriatric hens

My littles are nearing the end of their quartantine. They've been in a 12x12 stall for the last three weeks, next week will be a full month. They are energetic little things-- and they actually like to fly. Their future home-- 11x13 "coop" with about 20' of roosting space. Currently...

Chiggers-- Permethrin? Sevin? Or something else

Our weather has been warm and humid-- and on two different days I came in with lots of chigger bites. Friend who was clearing branches outside the end of the chicken run told me he got chigger bites too. Chickens seem fine, but I'd rather get ahead of this-- what kills chiggers? I have...

Poop consult please-- thought I had some cecal poop, but this morning saw red

Thank you-- a couple days ago, I realized my Corid had expired so I got a new bottle "just in case". So that's a good thing, I can literally start today. I have always done 2 tsp/gallon in the past so wasn't even thinking about a smaller dose-- though that's tempting since the weather is hot...

Poop consult please-- thought I had some cecal poop, but this morning saw red

Got new youngsters two weeks ago, they are in quarantine. Active, eating and drinking, chickening, so far so good. I've seen a few poos that look like cecal shedding, caramel to brown in color, small quantity, sludgy in appearance. But 90% of the poop has been good/normal. I've attached two...

Young growouts are kept inside 24x7 for quarantine- Vit D supplement needed since no sunshine?

I recently got 5 younsters-- and they are quarantining in a stall in the barn. 2 of them are now 12 weeks old, the other 3 are 8 weeks old. They all came from a group of 30-ish being kept together. I see them preening/grooming often. And I'm seeing feathers on the floor. No one is bald, but...

Got some youngsters today..... First babies since 2016

Oh yes, there are roosts. Enough for 10-12 chickens, and they had practiced on all the available roosts. Just checked, and thankfully all of them are on proper roosts now, none have escaped and none of 8' up!

Got some youngsters today..... First babies since 2016

I got my first chicks back in 2016, and raised them carefully. Over the years, there were some losses, and I added some point of lay pullets. I learned the hard way that production breeds do produce but don't live long lives. When I got down to two of the original chicks, I figured I'd let...

Kalmbach ORGANIC Henhouse Reserve - what's in those green pellets??!!!

I have two elderly hens that were not eating well, and I tried Henhouse Reserve-- because of all the whole grains. They ate it well, regained weight, and actually started laying again at 9 years old. I was not crazy about the corn, so next time got one Henhouse Reserve and one Organic. The...

4YO Hen- thin, weak, wobbly/loses her balance

Update: The hen remained very still, no signs of distress but stopped eating and drinking, even if I supported her to stand. She passed quietly late yesterday. The 9 year olds seem 110% fine and lay on alternating days, so I suspect this was an internal problem not something contagious. From...

4YO Hen- thin, weak, wobbly/loses her balance

You are so kind. Thank you for supporting me on this. I realize I'm probably losing her, but just want her to be safe, comfortable, warm. It's ALWAYS worth a little extra trouble to be gentle and compassionate to any creature. Even those who never gave you a single egg-- it's not her fault.

4YO Hen- thin, weak, wobbly/loses her balance

this morning she was on the floor, resting. During the night, she only moved one time-- in place, but flapping her wings a little. (I have cameras on the horse stalls, so I can check such things). I picked her up, and she could not stay standing without assistance. I kept her up for a few...

4YO Hen- thin, weak, wobbly/loses her balance

I figured she would not last long when I put her in the cage. Went back about an hour later to check, and she was standing, had eaten and drank some water. I put a light sheet over most of the cage, to make sure she wasn't getting any wind. Wind has increased to 60 mph and tonight we'll drop...
