I have an older Americauna hen that isnt quite as friendly as Tim, they both lay lovely eggs though, I am partial to Buff Orpingtons seeing as my favorite hen Popcorn was one, very sweet bird.
This is Tim and she is the cuddliest chicken I have owned, I was rather endeared this morning when she walked up to me and let me scoop her up, she then just sat on my lap/hand till I was ready to get up and go inside. She is a 6 month old and laying Americauna
Today after 3-4 years of having a small flock got a soft shelled egg, it made me laugh and I showed it around like an oddity to my family but how do I keep it from happening again and is it Ok to use? It was a pullets first egg
I found out it was most likely late stage cocci, my other older hen started displaying similar symptoms and almost dropped dead but I treated with Amprolium and she perked up pretty quick
They very well could have just been shedding intestinal tract, which can be normal, one generally only has to worry about cocci if the stool is completely blood. Had to take care of an outbreak in my coop of cocci a couple months ago, killed my favorite hen and I had another hen on deaths door...
Thank you, I've got a triple antibiotic on it and wrapped it tight enough to keep dirt out of it, the ground is very dry where she's at and I'm not going to worry about the other foot
So I discovered my eldest hen has black scabs on the bottom of both her feet, I soaked them in epsom salts for a few nights and today I used tweezers and small surgical scissors to get off the deeper of the two and cleaned, soaked, squeezed and repeated on that side but no plug or pus was...
As of today she is still alive and well, and growing! I hadn't realized how big she's gotten in the past few weeks till I looked back at her old pictures. Although Sigyn is healthy I think my eldest hen now has bumble foot its always something with them. I'll keep honing my doctoring skills on...
This is Sigyn, and she has conquered many a trials in her short 12 (14? I don't know) weeks. It starts with my favorite hen dying, and the quick scramble after to find a replacement in my small flock. After a few days of scrolling Craigslist I came across 8 week leghorn crosses, seeing it as a...
We found out that what was stuck was an apricot pit and we gave her an Epsom salt drench to help with the sourness in her crop,by this morning I rubbed on her and felt nothing obstructing her crop, she is bright and excited to forage with the rest of the girls, even pecked an older gal to get...
She's drinking some here and there, and when I massage on her crop she spits up gunk so i figure the oil might coat the blockage and make it easier to pass
It is soft in most places, swollen and has a small hard lump in the middle of the swelling, in the afternoon heat she has wilted quite a bit besides being in shade and having a friend with her. She is maybe only 10 weeks old
So I let my chickens out of the coop today and noticed Sigyn doing a weird lifting/jerking motion so I separated her and saw her crop is impacted/slow, I've given pro biotic water, puked her, (nasty smelling greenish fluid came out twice) and have offered soaked layer feed with pro biotics and...
About a week or two ago my favorite her died of what I thought was egg binding, but nowy other oldest hen is loosing feathers, droopy, lethargic, bloody poo and what appeared to be worms in the poo, so I'm going to start treating everyone for cocci tomorrow and possibly start a wormer after...
