    Mites! (In Canada) please help!

We've had our chickens just over a year so I'm not well versed in issues that pop up because we haven't had many to deal with. I just went out to collect eggs. Put them in the bucket and when I got them into the kitchen I noticed mites crawling all over them. So gross!! I'm in Canada so I don't...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Oh ok. As long as they don't get dehydrated! Lol These tiny little creatures definitely have a way of making new chick mamas paranoid! Thanks for the advice. :)

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

They are three days old today. I'm just worried that they have been used to being up all night with the heat lamps and won't be able to get a drink until morning. I hope they will be okay. We dipped their beaks to show them where it was but they had no interest. They just want to huddle under...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

OUR CHICKS ARE HERE!!! :) Questions though...what should the height of the MHP be? Just above their backs when they are laying down sleeping? Or touching when they are standing? And what setting do you use for the heating pad? I have the same one Blooie has with the 6 settings and "stay on"...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So I put my MHP together today. Here's some pictures of what I did. Instead of using bungee cords I used some heavy duty zip ties, since my husband has an endless supply of them. I can always cut them off and then put more on again if needed. Zip tied the heating pad around the frame. The...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hahaha chickens are crazy!! Lol Do you just put the press and seal on the top where they would stand on top of it? Or cover the whole thing?

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Thank you! I've just got to wait for the sharp edges to be ground down and then I will bungee cord the pad to the frame and stick it inside a pillow case. Still debating on the press and seal...would be nice for it to be wipe able. Lol

    Heating lamp or EcoGlow?

I'm trying the route of a mama heating pad. I just got my heating pad yesterday. Cost me $45 (in Canada so it's probably cheaper in the US) and the other materials I have on hand. As opposed to $150+ on an Eco glow. :)

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

My hubby is going to use a grinder and take off all the little pokey pieces from where we cut the wire tonight. Then I'll put it all together and we will have a MHP! I'm soooooo excited to get my first chicks!!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Aart that is what I was thinking...the stiffer wire would be a better structure. And if I'm going to wrap the whole thing in a pillow case, there shouldn't be any way of them getting stuck in it...right?

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok, so before I start making my cave...what size hardware cloth should I use? I have the 2"x4" and then some tiny .5" square stuff. And just so I'm clear about the trials and errors...I put the heating pad under the wire and attach with bungee cords and then wrap the whole thing in a pillow...

Coop Project: Maken the Plunge & Getting Chickens

Aart directed me to your post. I'm also going to be setting up a fish tank brooder for my little chicks I'm getting this weekend. I had hoped to put them in front of the window too. Any issues I should consider about using a tank as a brooder? :) thanks I enjoyed looking at all of your pictures!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So I went on a little shopping spree to get ready for chicks. To go along with my purple coop, I got purple mason jar attachments. :) A thermometer for the tank. And the all important heating pad. This is the right one correct? I got the most expensive one they had....lol

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I'd like to say that I could just put them outside but our weather has been all over the place and I just don't trust that it's warm enough yet. It's still going down to 0C or lower at night. I don't trust that we've seen our last frost. Once the weather is more consistent I love the idea of...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Thanks aart. I will definitely keep my eye on them and read how they are behaving. I can always move them if the window isn't working. I think that's part of the appeal of the fish tank on a stand. I can move it practically anywhere I have the space. :)

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Blooie...I'm a newbie to the idea, and I admit I read about the first 10 pages, and then skipped to the last. Could you link your article again for us? With a toddler, I just don't have enough time to read all 600 pages of this thread lol But I would definitely love to read the most updated info...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Yes I was thinking about that, but the particular window I'm thinking about doesn't get direct sunlight for very long. And its in a little area of my house that tends to be cooler...so I don't think I'll have a problem with them overheating...more so I'll be worried that they aren't warm enough...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok great! :) So I'll just rely on them to let me know. Haha Thanks!! My favourite colour is purple...(I even had a purple car lol) but my husband won't let me decorate the rooms in our house with purple, and I needed SOMETHING that was purple....so because the chickens were my birthday present...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok great. So they can sit in front of the window and have a view! :) I will definitely put a thermometer inside the tank. What should the temperature be for one week old chicks? And how will I know that the heating pad is warm enough for them? Just if they come out from under it? I guess...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hi all....I'm new to the idea of having chicks. I got my first chickens at 8-9 weeks old last July. (Yay! We all survived our Canadian winter! LOL) I'm REALLY intrigued by the idea of creating a mama hen cave for the 3 chicks I plan on getting this weekend. Since I'm in Canada and our weather...
