I have an RIR and a Dominique, both of them started crowing this week because we introduced a few new girls and they got super excited.... They're turned 8 weeks old on Saturday! I've been trying to catch a video of them doing it, but of course they won't let me.... The RIR definitely looked...
In your experience, how long does it typically take for a new pecking order to be established? I have three chickens (1 hen, 2 roos) that are just over 8 weeks old, and we introduced two older birds into the coop this weekend (just around laying age). We stayed in the yard and kept a close eye...
Hahaha lordy no.... thank goodness we're getting our coop today... we just couldn't believe the crashing sound we woke up to Saturday morning was an escape attempt...
That's what we've been doing in their brooder box... Figure it's a good way to make sure they're all getting fed at some point... They seem to be sharing for the moment. Just hoping they don't get too fat.... :-P
Hey All!
I read somewhere that it's better to regulate how much they are getting and getting them into a routine of eating twice a day (providing feed in the morning and then at night)? Our three "girls" will be moving into their coop this weekend, and we've been providing consistent feed for...
What's the breeders company name and location? I've been trying to search around here but not finding too much... I want to try and fill up our coop this summer! :)
Hey Yo from Riverside!
My hubby and I started small with some "classroom born" incubated babies...
Our two RIR's and our Dominique are nearing their fourth week, and have learned how to escape from our brooder box. We researched building our own coop, but hubby found one he really liked...
It was amazing the jubilation that they felt seeing the embryos in the eggs and feeling like we had a bunch of "winners".... then seeing the chicks in person they were in awe... It was super cute!
Okay I know I'm a little late to the convo.... but we actually candled eggs twice in my classroom!!!
We got the eggs from a local farm, and candled on Day 7 and Day 18 and then put the eggs in lockdown!!!
We watched this video with our kindergarteners so that they could help us recognize...
Carbon
Carbon Again...
Carbon a Third Time....
Chocobo
Chocobo is incredibly photogenic...
Chocolate... not so much
This one just came out amusing...
Chocobo and CArbon
Chocobo is clearly much larger than the other two...
Sure! I'll wrangle up the little wigglers after work and snap a few! Their wing feathers are growing in nicely.... and the two Red's have tail feathers growing in too it looks like...
So I've read... but then what should I be looking for in the next few weeks? They both have a comb and something of a wattle... Roo's tend to walk more upright, yes? One of my baby Red's, Chocobo, is almost a giant compared to my other Red and my Dominique... and there is barely a days...
As a kindergarten teacher using an incubator, I wasn't comfortable venting the chicks that we had in the classroom to find out their gender. My co-teacher and I found a few pictures of the spots on the Dominique heads and the pin feather growth of the Red's and thought that the ones I kept were...
Thanks June! My co-teacher and I knew that he didn't have much of a shot when we took him out of the incubator... He was really rough... That's why I elected to take him home as sort of a pet project instead of back to the farm... He wouldn't have lasted an hour there... At least he made it a...
He was getting medicated feed, and no his vent seemed okay.... We just lost him... :( On review, he was more deformed than we had thought so I think it was just the nature of the beast.... At least we gave him a good week! :(
He had been eating and drinking on his own with ease. We found the chicks had hatched in our incubator on Monday morning... and we started applying the band-aids to Peeper on Tuesday morning and all has been well. His beak dipped into the water but he didn't seem interested... He's been...
My little ones are about a week old... One little one in particular was born spraddle legged, so I used the band-aid method to help him stand upright and walk around. Peeper (as I call him) has been great for the last few days, hopping around and terrorizing his "sisters", but today after my...
