I am posting just to vent a little. My three girls are driving me crazy. Last year was my first year with them and they ate all of my flowers and my veggies, so this year I added a fence element to the mix. I planted a small winter garden with some lettuce, greens and broccoli and I...
Thanks for responding. They are both 7 1/2 months old. Not really any stress or routine change as far as I can see. It has been cold the last couple of days. 28 at night and 50 during the day which is a little colder then they are used to. Been laying for about 2 months.
I am writing this because coincidentally I had two separate issues today from my two layers. They have been laying perfectly until today. Their daily routine is, I let them out to free range in the back yard, then put them in at night and they have layer feed in the run/coop.
The Black...
Just to give an update and ask for more advice. Our new girl is approaching 7 weeks and we have for the last couple of weeks, allowed her to go outside, while the other two are in their run, and then we put her in her small crate thing we made and allowed the two older hens out. So for a...
Hello,
We had 3 hens and unfortunately that is the max that I think we can fit in our coop. A few months ago, one of them died. The remaining two have been doing well. I wanted to add one more to the group but didn't want to start with a chick and we found a nice 4 week old barred rock. I...
I live in the East Bay we are **** near neighbors. I attached a picture of mine. It is small and simple due to the fact that I have a small area for them. It basically serves as sleeping and eating area only since I let them run around through out the day but still big enough for my 3 so that...
Hello Everyone,
I have a question for the group. I have three ladies that are 11 weeks old. Two White Leghorns and One Black Australorp. Every day I open their coop and they free range and cause havoc in my yard and when it starts to get dusk, they walk back into their run, up the ladder...
I know my girls are still young, but I wanted some heads up on when I should introduce them to the nest boxes. They are currently 8 weeks old and I have a piece of plywood blocking off the entry to the boxes. About what time should I remove the plywood and give them access to the nesting...
I agree with Ridgerunner on the 3 suggestions, all will work fine. I do not recommend the PVC pipe for reasons mentioned. I use 2x4s with the wide side up and an occasional 2x2 just so they can use it as a step to get up. They tend to play on the 2x2 and roost on the 2x4.
I have a question. My girls are 7 weeks old and I have been giving them starter feed in a big 5 gallon container. They seem to be eating fine, but today I noticed that the more they eat the more powder/dust accumulates in the bottom of the place where they eat. I guess its from them pecking...
It is funny that you mention this. I give my girls meal worms and they love it and they will devour some cheese. But almost everything else other then their food, they just snub it. Grapes, bread, apricots, berrys, watermellon! Picky little ones!
Here is mine, simple and basic but gets the job done. I have three girls and I let them run around most of the day, so this is just for sleeping.
I still have some fine tuning to do with trim and decorations.
Hey everyone, I am thinking pullets but I wanted some help from the experts. I also have a 6 week old Black Australorp, but I will wait another week to post.
Hello Everyone,
I have a question regarding my new girls. They are 6 weeks old and in their coop/run already. For the last couple of weeks, they have been good girls and walk into their coop for the night and I then close them in. I do not have food or water in the coop. I wake up at 6 am...
I just finished this small coop/run and I am happy with the results. My question is, if you look at the left of the picture you can see my nesting box area. I just put my chicks in the coop and they already started chillin in the nest area. I do not have any layers yet, but I don't think this...
