    Molting or Pecking/Social Problem?

Yes, it is actually hay. After hearing opinions here and reading elsewhere I agree that she is molting. I'm having trouble finding high protein poultry feed locally so I may need to make some at home. She is also sequestering herself under a nearby wheelbarrow. So I'm checking on her often and...

Not sure this is more clear. She's not bleeding this morning at all thankfully.

Amazing how tough it is to get good photos of these birds!

    Molting or Pecking/Social Problem?

Thanks -- I do put straw on top of the snow but it gets covered with each new snow, so... the main area of their house is 32 sq feet, the floor is about a foot-deep of sand covered with straw, then there is an attached separate area for the nest boxes.

    Molting or Pecking/Social Problem?

I'd attach photos but the site apparently doesn't like my iPhone. They were about 8 weeks old when we got them Memorial Day wknd. I'll go buy some higher protein feed. Thanks for the help!

    Molting or Pecking/Social Problem?

Our 3 hens have done fine so far this winter. We have them in a fairly generous size coupe with lots of straw that we freshen daily and of course fresh water and food. They have access to the outdoors but typically won't go out if there is fresh snow on the ground, so they haven't ventured very...

any way to tell which eggs coming from which hen?

Well thanks everyone. We have now confirmed, by patient observation , that the small pale eggs are hers (the barred rock). We now just need to figure out how to get her shells to be stronger. The eggs she produces are not only small and pale in color, but also very fragile-shelled. All 3 eat...

    what is normal preening behavior?

Thank you everyone! Her injury seems to have healed up and so far we haven't seen any other problems. We will be sure to keep an eye on it though. We live in an extremely windy part of the state, so while I appreciate that deep litter method may cause too much heat, given the amount of air...

any way to tell which eggs coming from which hen?

Is there any way to determine which eggs are coming from which hens? We have 3 hens. We are getting 2-3 eggs most days of the week. We get a mix of large-medium size brown eggs, and small pale/light brown eggs. I have included a photo of the eggs below. We have 1 plymouth rock hen, and 2...

    what is normal preening behavior?

Hello, We have 3 hens, all adopted locally around 10 weeks of age. They started laying eggs July 30th. I posted a question about a neck injury on one of the hens last week (in the injuries section of the forums). It seemed minor, but it resulted in dried blood on her neck. A responder to...

[non-emergency] Chicken with blood on neck but otherwise fine

Hello, We are about 3 months into our chicken experience. They just started laying eggs July 31. We are up to getting 3 eggs per day now. This morning we let the girls out of their coop (they free-range during the the day in a fenced garden-type area) and we had 2 unusual occurrences. 1)...

    Additions to a coop

Hello. We adopted 4 pullets (about 3 months old) and have them overnighting in a coop we purchased and assembled. The coop is roughly 79" long x 29" wide x 38" high. It has two nest boxes. The coop sits inside our fenced garden. We want to have the chickens free range in the garden during...

Would you pay for an automated chicken coop?

Sounds like a fantastic idea to me! (Says the person who has only had 4 chickens for 5 days!) Especially for folks who have busy lives/families and/or have to be out of town now and then.
