Rat Terrier is a great idea. Squirrels and chipmonkls can carry the diseases you mentioned. Here ya go. http://www.gumbocooking.com/rabbit-squirrel-gumbo.html
A rooster can help. We had to cover the top of our run with bird netting except where there is a roof. Owls, coyotes, foxes, racoons, opossums, bobcats, cougars, bears and dogs are a few predators we protect against. Whew now I'm tired. Lol
Yes, we do leave the door open. We used dog run chain link panels for the run. Squirrels ran through the chain link. We put up hardware fabric/cloth. That slowed them down but found new openings in the roof or by the door. Creative little creatures they are. Chip monks also foraged the feeder...
Yes I think so. I think it has to be an adolescent juvenile, in my opinion. There was a really big owl that flew off when I came out of the house. This smaller one was trying to learn how to hunt, because attacking the covered coop was really odd and not natural. I hear the owls at night but...
I have ways to run owls off. Can't eliminate them though, per law. Basically after throwing dead branches at the tree the owl perched upon, after this drastic tactic the owl stayed around. We kept the chicken in the coop for a week or so. One danger bunny (cottontail) hasn't been seen for a...
Yes I agree. I was wondering if someone nearby was feeding the owls (what I don't know). One of the three a juvinile is definitely not real afraid of humans. On the other hand it takes off as soon as our Chessy comes on the deck.
I agree. I started out a little predator proof and hardened the structure. I made good use of used dog run chain link panels. Layers of 1/4" wire fabric and deer mesh. This keeps most predators out, but not all pests.
The owl keeps coming back. It landed 10 feet away from me twice. Strangest thing I've ever saw, it must be a juvenile. One evening about a month ago there was three of these big owls in the trees just after sunset. One of the little cotton tails is missing but we have been keeping the hens...
Don't like the lions around. The wolves were a bit eerie. They seemed to answer each other. Very strange. Our Chessy wanted to go out to the woods and chase them. She's 80 lbs and hard to hold back.
Protector from Predators - Last Saturday I let the chickens free range. Living in the the forest on 8 acres we only have 1/2 acre cleared for the home, yard and parking. Sure we have owl's, hawks and eagles. We lost two hens last year to birds. We had wolves calling to each other after dark just...
This summer (2017) we had about 15 squirrels raiding the coop, eating the food and keeping the hens from laying. We live in the western Washington forest. I walked into the coop to clean up one day and a squirrel sat in the feeder growling at me! Didn't know how aggressive the tree rats were. I...
I would take the end panel of the run off. Purchase 2 posts and set them on each side of the coop. Streach new fabric from the open end of the run to the new posts next to the coop.
The hardware cloth is a must if you small chicks and chain link fencing. We have a dog run and love it. When I first put up the dog run one chick darted right through the chain link. She looked to big to fit the hole but she went through the chain link like greased lightning! The woods are close...
