Comment by 'SandyK' in article 'Building a Chicken Coop? Do's, Don'ts and Things to Consider.'

My husband and I built our coop. I still pinch myself every time I think about how lucky I am to have a nice coop for my girls. We put details of how we built it up on our page. I can’t decide which would be the most important thing that we included, water, electricity or their porch. They are...

Official BYC Poll: What Do Your Chickens Live In?

My husband and I built our coop. It has turned out to be one of the most favorite things we have ever done together. The girls are totally spoiled and have a home for life. Every evening just about and some times during the day too, I go down and sit with them on their covered porch. They...

I made them. Nothing fancy, just cut some material the width I needed it hemmed them and then sewed a seam for the rod to go through.

Hi Grammie, Thanks for your post. That’s exactly why I wanted water run to the coop. Dust seems more of an issue for me. I do have poop boards under the roosts which helps so much. I just scrape everything into a bucket and into the compost pile it goes. The walls were painted with a good...

Hi Patsy, Thank you for your sweet comments. The fish scale was a special order from Home Depot I believe. It is the resin type material and the pieces lock together. Hubby will say that getting that in place was the hardest part of the whole coop. But I too love it 😊

Need something to line coop floor....

I love my linoleum flooring. It cleans up so nice. I’ve had it in my coop for 8 years now and it looks new. Also have it on the poop boards and they get scraped down every day. Only have changed them out twice now.

Can a racoon open a barn door latch?

We had a very smart raccoon a couple years ago. He found a hole in my netting over the run. We have an automatic door on the coop, which he was able to raise the door, go in get a chicken and not only raise the door back up, but bring the dead chicken outside the coop. He got 9 of my girls...

What chicken breeds are best for holding/tame?

I would say a lot has to do with how well they are held and loved when they are chicks. My girls line up to be held, sometimes 3 or 4 are piled together trying to sit in my lap at once. Silly girls

What's the one thing you wish you had included in your coop?

I absolutely love my coop. Bigger is always better and mine is already big. It would have been nice to have a separate area for babies and also hens who want to sit r to break them from sitting. What I love about mine is electricity, running water including sink, auto poop door opener, brand...

    Doughy crop, worms and moulting

Thank you for your post. I looked more today and don’t think it’s tape worms. What I saw was tiny white pieces. She has lost a lot of weight going without food for a couple weeks now. Thin lower belly now, so not stomach issues. At least I don’t think. I’ll check again tonight. Crop is going...

Thank you for your reply. I guess their advertising is misleading saying it is a dewormer. I will try to find the one you recommended.

    Doughy crop, worms and moulting

i have an older EE, 5 or 6 yrs old. I picked her up the other day and noticed her crop was hard. She has always been on the heavy side, so I really did not notice it before. So I started with the oil and water, then went to the Ducolax with Epsom Salt in her water. Still not much coming out...

    Automatic Chicken Door and Raccoon

Hi Everyone, Need some advice. After 5 years of having an automatic chicken door opener, a raccoon chewed through our heavy duty netting covering the run and pulled up the chicken door in the middle of the night. He actually did this three different times. We figured out how he was getting in...
