Thank you,
Once again I just started raising chickens, so this is my first time for many things. I just wanted to ensure I did not directly cause a problem. When I candled the eggs, I removed them one at a time from mom, checked it, put it my pocket and got the other one. Once I checked...
So one of my hens went broody just before Thanksgiving. I gave her 3 eggs just to see what would happen. Yesterday I checked for extra eggs and notice one was cracked all the way around with one larger crack. I assumed this was pipping and candled them. All I could see in the egg was the air...
Thank you Mrs Brooks,
I do notice it seems like they are inhaling their food. The rooster with them is new and I think they are bit scared. The will not even roost by him, though they lay around him. There is no other problems that I have seen. They run right to me for treats, and about eat...
Hello,
I am new to chickens have have a question. I currently have 2 small flocks that are close to each other. One flock has 6 chickens at about 5 months and 3 at about 10 months. My other flock is about 3 months old with a 4 month old rooster.
I have noticed the younger ones seem to be...
Thank you all. I can give them double the run space if it is best. I plan to cover about 4 ft of the run as well with Plastic. I plan to keep about 6" to a 1ft open around the top for ventilantion. This should give them a snow and draft free run as well as the coop.
I think the Astrulorp is a girl, but the other two look like roosters to me. How long have you had them? at 18 weeks, roosters should be crowing, so maybe they are girls.
You could put the rooster with the other hens. Once you confirm you eggs are fertile, replace the eggs under your broody hens with fertile eggs. Chickens cannot tell the difference in their eggs and someone else either, from what I have read.
My ramp is an pallet cut to size. My coop is about 3 foot off the ground. They use the pallet to get in, but normally just fly to the ground in the morning. I find food and water will get them adjusted. When you put your chickens up, put the food and water up with them. When you open the...
Hello,
I have 8 hens and 1 rooster currently in a coop and run system. They get a few hours Monday - Friday to run free and pretty much all weekend, but with winter coming they will be locked up more and more. My coop is 3ft off the ground and is 4 ft by 8 ft by 4 ft. I have an 8ft. by 10ft...
This really is great news. I guess I do look at them as cute little babies that need my protection lol. I may try it this winter. I would love to be hatching eggs from a breeding flock next spring. Thank you all so much for the links and advice.
Hello,
I wanted some advice on raising chicks.
I have just pulled the trigger on my first flock. I picked up a barnyard mix locally. I love the fact that I have chickens, but I am not sold on these chickens. I thought about using these for meat and hatching my own or buying chicks. My...
My plan is to breed Black Sex Links. I plan to have about 4 coops
1 a hen coop for eggs, about 30 chickens. 20x20 run and 20x20 coop
2 a breeding coop for 1 Buckeye and 5 Barred Rocks. 10x10 run and 10x10 coop
3 a spring coop for extra roosters I hatch, 30 to 40 birds possibly 20x20 run and...
Now in the winter there could be days in a row they may not go outside. Should I adjust the coop space to give them more room, or is closer better? I live just North of Flint and the winters can get bad here.
