Help! I don't know what breed this chick is.

Basic Questions for bringing home baby chicks

I'm getting a replacement batch of chicks soon. I'm new to this all too! Our first chicks had death by predator, so we are hoping that our new run design will work better than the old. We have a dog crate - a large one, with a rabbit waterer in the door and a bowl zip tied to the door under it...

lost our flock to a mystery predator

I'm sorry about your chicks :( my birds were only 9 or 10 weeks old. Good luck getting revenge. Maybe I'll have to set some traps on my yard to see what we get.

lost our flock to a mystery predator

It's not just suburban, it's geographic location. I did some extensive googling and we do not have coyotes, wild cats, or weasels that anyone else has seen/trapped. Skunks we do have but there was no skunk smell.

lost our flock to a mystery predator

What precautions should we take to prevent this from happening again? I would have thought dogs would have left marks, which is why I discounted them to begin with.

lost our flock to a mystery predator

Two birds went missing and the rest had no surface wounds but broken necks/legs. Some of the chicken wire was pulled up (we didn't know about hardware cloth being a better choice - we are completely redoing our coop and run set up, what we had came with the house we bought and the previous owner...
