    Reading, Berkshire, UK!

Hello! I am in Reading in Berkshire in the UK. I am looking for other comrades in the neighbourhood with chickens or ducks. Is there anybody out there? I have 3 naughty Khaki Campbells, one of whom is laying now, and I love their wee nut-brown faces and their messy ducky ways x

    help with sexing Khaki Campbell.

Thanks - this is very reassuring! I revisited the website for the farm from which we got Honey, Bonbon and Pretzel and it seems they only sell female ducks so that is quite reassuring too though I suppose there could be some mistakes - it seems that it's hard to sex ducks until they grow a...

    help with sexing Khaki Campbell.

Sorry, these aren't great either - it has rained lots here recently and the grey light is hard for taking good pictures! Must admit though, I'd describe Pretzel as a dingy brown colour and haven't picked up on any green in her colouring...

    help with sexing Khaki Campbell.

Thank you so much for coming back to me with further tips on sexing my - ahem - GIRLS. The sound recording I linked to is a page, I wonder if embedding the sound file will work better? It's quite a long recording but you hear them all from a few seconds in...

    help with sexing Khaki Campbell.

Apologies for cross-posting but after putting this in another thread I noticed that it hadn't been active since February so I'm trying again in here, hope that's OK! I have been lurking around all the forums dedicated to the topic of sexing ducks and decided to finally post here - Getting...

    sexing khaki campbells

I have been lurking around all the forums dedicated to the topic of sexing ducks and decided to finally post here - Getting our ducks was a bit hectic; we went to a farm and said "we'd like to buy some ducks please". The woman to whom we spoke said "righto" and leapt into a pen full of ducks...

Any ideas how to keep duck ponds clean without major costs?

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this answer and laugh every time I think of it. We have made a duckpond and it STINKS. We are buying a hand pump and looking at filtration media to go in 2 big barrels... our hope is that we can circulate the water around the filtration barrels...

    The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

The enclosure is predator proof but I was extremely worried about the ducks, nevertheless. We live in an urban environment and there are foxes around. I had 3 tries at getting them in, but eventually at half past midnight I got it to happen. (Was working on it from 9pm!) I tried rounding them...

    The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

My Khaki Campbells are currently outside in their enclosure in the rain and the night... it's my fault because I put some egg-shaped stones in their duckhouse, kind of thinking that it might help them lay, like the rubber and ceramic eggs I have seen my pals put in their chicken houses. But the...

Any ideas how to keep duck ponds clean without major costs?

We love your solution so much - just wondered: did you bury cables and do you keep the pump on continuously, or do you take a trailing socket outside a few times a week and run the pump for an hour or so each time? We are looking at copying your amazing system but are wondering if we will need...

    ducks in the rain!

You all have helped me to feel much better here - my 3 ducks are going ape in the rain, drilling all over the lawn, going in and out of the pond... I opened the gate of their enclosure so they can find shelter under a tree if they want it, but they - like your ducks - seem to really love the...

    The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong thread, I have 3 wonderful Khaki Campbells - quite young but apparently will start laying soon - and I am a bit worried today because they are out in the rain and look really wet. I've left their little house open and it's full of straw and clean, dry...

Any ideas how to keep duck ponds clean without major costs?

I agree the pond looks weirdly massive in that photo but it genuinely is 1 x 2m... I will see how I get on with the siphon and report back. Thanks for input on stink time and individual duck needs!

What To Use For A Duck Pond And How To Keep It Clean??????

We have built a pond, did not put in a drain, do not own a pump! We are learning on the fly. Though it looks big in this photo, our pond is very small so I'm thinking that maybe fortnightly we can siphon the water out with an automatic siphon pump (into a water barrel, ready for watering...

Any ideas how to keep duck ponds clean without major costs?

This is a really great set-up, I wonder if I could add a similar modification to our pond or if it would be a bit of an over-engineered solution given that our pond is so small... the only thing is: does your sump pump need mains power? Did you have to lay a cable to your pond outdoors? We would...

Any ideas how to keep duck ponds clean without major costs?

Our pond is quite small - 1 x 2m I think, and about .5m deep at the deepest point. The ducks were initially afraid of it but now they cannot get enough of splashing about in it! It's just a liner in the ground, no filters, plants or pump and it's getting predictably quite whiffy and gross. I...

    The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your ducks being hit by a driver, that's awful. Very glad to see that little Buffy is surviving, though, and how nice of you to put up the wild mallards during the winter. I have only just joined Backyard Chickens but have 3 little Khaki Campbells which are still...

    Hello I'm Felix

We did build a ledge in the pond so that it would be easy for them to get in and out, but they don't necessarily know about it - the water all looks the same from the top. I will have a think about a ladder; it would need to have a smooth end as the pond liner will be damaged by anything...
