    Guinea Fowl nesting/mating call?

I hope you have some success for sure but what I've read about guineas nesting outside has not sounded good. You're at the mercy of predators.

    Guinea Fowl nesting/mating call?

I've discovered two rogue nests in the weeds from my flock too. I just gather them, rustle the nest and put the eggs in their communal nest in the coop. Once a majority of my girls went broody they stopped making outside nests. Timing of free ranging helps us too, we don't let them out until...

    Guinea Fowl nesting/mating call?

There definitely is an "egg song" the females make while setting. It's the only non-abrasive call they make. It's a lower volume, long repeated soft call that some of mine hold for up to 10 seconds. If you can't see her but hear the call, she's sitting on eggs.

    Killer moms

So I have been letting my hens set on their communal nest for a month now. The chicks have begun to hatch but as soon as a momma registers movement they begin to peck and kill the emerging keets. It's brutal. We've rescued three so far, easily another 70 potentials. I have a brooder with a momma...

    Hawk eying Guineas

Personal experience says Hawks will occasionally try to take a Guinea. I had one try to take off with my favorite alpha male and I had the chance to charge the hawk before he made his kill bite on my guineas neck. I went online for advice and strung up some CDs on trees around their ranging...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I love this heating pad approach. This is my first year with chicks using this method over heating lamps. My chicks are 2 weeks old and I have their pad set to #4/6 and at night they choose to sleep on top of the pad instead of below it. They show no signs of distress. Should I be concerned or...

    Upcycled homestead

Eight and a half months of learning pains have paid off. Our first flock of 11 have survived their amateur keepers and this morning, seven and a half months later since we got them as days old keets, have rewarded us with our first two eggs! Very excited. And we are adding chickens and turkeys...

    Upcycled homestead

We have arrived at the six month mark for our little flock. They have learned to range their entire acreage and have learned to get along with the dogs and cats of the land. These guys have done everything by the book and never stop amusing us. We do wish they'd stop hopping up on the vehicles...

Ok the guineas are 16 weeks old...

I've recently been free ranging my 12 week olds. I think treat training really helped keep them near their friends still inside the pen. I would scatter some millet all around the pen and coop and the birds rotated daily to outside never roamed far at all. Now they stay between their pen and our...

    Upcycled homestead

Our flock is doing very good. 12 weeks old now and ranging in the yard for the afternoons for four days now. It's endlessly amusing to watch them curiously and cautiously discover all the new things in their yard. Luckily they spend most of their time directly in front of the house for us to...

    Upcycled homestead

Thanks Elliot. We are trying to run this show based on the same thinking there. We hope by keeping them penned from now through the winter that they will associate the coop and pen with safety and always come home at night. Their first day out we walked to the coop to lock them up and see what...

    Upcycled homestead

They've been hootin and hollerin outside for days now. Seem to all be happy and healthy. They leave the coop on their own after their door is opened and seem to have taught themselves to coop up at sundown on their own. I'll plan to free range them in the afternoons come spring.

    Upcycled homestead

Hello everyone. Exciting day at the Keeterwaul estate. Our flock has just finished installing their fly pen attatched to their upcycled feed barn turned coop. We have a mixed group of 11 guineas. Best we can guess they are around nine weeks old. Today was their first day outside and we want to...
