Mine free range and eat far less than secured chickens. There is also less daylight this time of year, the temps are usually cooler and they might have slacked off on their egg production somewhat. Also, have they molted yet? Mine tend to eat less when starting to molt, I do offer more protein...
As far as "profitable" sexlinks producing brown eggs are more profitable than white leghorns. I can sell more brown eggs than white, plus sexlinks grow faster on less feed for meat production.
In my experience my Delawares and New Hampshires have outlayed my RIRs. I found the RIR to be consistent, but the eggs are smaller and they were not as productive as the other two breeds. And RIR have a nasty disposition which I don't like on my farm.
I, too, use deep litter and have never had a problem with dampness or smell. I turn it daily with a pitchfork or rake, takes only a minute or two, and the chickens are sometimes confined in there if the snow gets too deep for a week or two. I am going to "winterize" my coop today or tomorrow...

Not as a problem for the chickens. Actually, the only time the coyotes are bad are in the spring when they're feeding pups. We have a horrendous vole, gopher and wood rat problem that keeps the coyotes and hawks well fed!
