It's Monday and nothing. We did the float test and while all looked viable and were low floaters, none moved so we cracked a few. All had embryos that stopped pretty early in development SO we're scrapping the bunch and then back to the drawing board. We will get a new thermometer and...
Thanks, ChestnutRidge. That is great information. I do think that while we maintained a consistent temperature that it may have been slightly on the low side 99.5 (or slightly below, but always above 99). I've bumped up the temp slightly and am sticking with my plan to l leave the eggs as is...
Thanks for the well wishes! Just checked and still nothing.
6Happiness - At what time of day did you originally set the eggs? I set them at 5:00 pm ET on the 24th so maybe I'm still a few hours behind you. (still keeping my fingers crossed)
We used the thermometer provided with the incubator and kept it at the marked 99.5 degree mark. It did not fluctuate much at all.
We have not had any condensation on the viewing windows. Using a flashlight I am able to still see water in the trays though.
What is involved with the float...
No, I didn't get a hydrometer for this first hatch. To be honest, I would rather do it the natural way, under a broody hen, but none of my girls would cooperate and I just got too impatient. I will see what the end result is and make a decision about getting one before my next hatch attempt...
We bought our first incubator about 4 weeks ago (Little Giant - Model 9200 Still Air Incubator w/automatic egg turner)
Follow instructions completely
Set 26 fertile eggs on Thursday, February 24 around 5pm.
Consistent temperature throughout the incubation period
Check/filled the water...
Update: Well I ended up getting 4 Java chicks and 7 BLRW chicks to put under her the evening of 5/6. The next morning, when she got up she only had 3 unhatched eggs under her and no new chicks. We knew that eggs were disappearing since we were pretty sure we had put ("we" being my husband who...
I have a BLRW sitting on 8 eggs due to hatch on Thursday, May 6th. I have a friend hatching out some Mottled Java's on Wednesday and I want to get some from him and put under her on Thursday night. I did not candle the eggs she is setting on so I will be happy if she hatches 4-5 of the eight...
Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up just letting it be and deciding that nature will have to take it's course.
Next time I will build a totally separate brood box. I will keep you posted!
This is my first shot at hatching a clutch under a broody. I know I have made several mistakes and will hopefully do better next time. My broody is a Silkie about 9 months old. She is sitting on 9 eggs and we are on Day 8. She is in a small dog crate in one of our goat stalls. Each night...
One of my flocks consist of 3 BOs and 5 BRs. The BOs are 27 weeks and none are laying as of yet. The comb and wattles on one girl are very red and I think she will start laying any day now. The others are not as developed and it will probably be another couple of weeks. The BRs are 23 weeks...
Thanks. I checked our feedstore (TSC) for the VetRx yesterday but they don't carry it. I will try the other pet supply stores in town tomorrow. I would prefer to hold off on the antibiotics if possible but I also don't want to delay treatment if it's inevitable.
My husband is picking up...
UPDATE and a couple of questions:
#1 EE chick is still the same. She is eEating, drinking, regular poo but I still hear the rattle when she breaths. Today it sounds more like its coming from one nostril but there is no discharge at all. Should I start her on antibiotic or since she seems to...
Thanks, dlhunicorn.
I will get the vitamins tomorrow. Quick update:
#1 - Still seems to be doing better but I still hear the rattle (especially in the evening). Eating and drinking and much more willing to have me handle her although I know she is missing her peeps.
#2 - Cockerel seemed...
Glenda - Thanks so much for the advice! I have answered your questions below.
DO YOU HAVE A VET IN THE TOWN WHERE YOU SHOP?
IF SO SEE IF HE WILL SEE THEM -
I will call my farm vet. Not sure if he treats chickens or not.
THEY DEFINETLY DO NEED SOME ANTIBIOTICS TO GET THEM OVER THE...
I am a newbie. I never had chickens before May of this year and I need some help. It seems the more I read the more confused I get.
Here's whats going on:
#1
4 week old EE - she is one of six pullets. Just started keeping them outside with some larger chicks (I live in Georgia and the...
