hen leaking urates - looks like vent gleet - can you help me?

Did you ever figure it out? My hen does this too. I've done the all natural remedies and baths but it keeps coming back. No bad smell though, and no behavior changes. Are some hens just messy poopers lol

    Rhode Island Red Thread!

I'm new, that's my disclaimer, but it seems to me that it wouldn't be bad for them because late layers happen in nature. There is a natural slow down according to daylight hours, so their bodies must naturally adjust. I reallllly want my first eggs but it's possible nature is going to take its...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

hmmm, if it is really hot, the hens will have very watery droppings as a means of dispersing heat.  So that could be whats up as well, or if you are giving lots of fruits. good to know. We had a cool down for two days, but tomorrow it's back up to 102..... I gave them a bath today along with...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thanks so much! It's hot here so I will give them a good bath and let them air dry. I was worried plain yogurt everyday might give them diarrhea. But if it's good for getting their digestive tracts in order we will get on it.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Hey y'all, how do you tell the difference between vent gleet and diarrhea? Two of my pullets have dirty butts. There have been much larger droppings and some diarrhea looking droppings as well. There is no bad smell, but, compared to pictures, it looks like gleet. Just not as severe.. I've had...

    Rhode Island Red Thread!

They have never laid since I've owned them. They aren't molting. They were terribly infested with mites and lice. That's taken care of and their wattles have grown larger and reddened up. One will sort of squat when I go to pet her. Squat walk more like. I was hoping they would get going before...

I lived in Flower Mound, just south of Denton, for 15 years. Went to university at SFA. I sure do miss it! I'm hoping to move back some day

Bum. I feel like my girls are getting close to laying! Super red combs and wattles. One even sort of squats when I pet her. It's like a squat walk lol . I was hoping they would start before the natural slow down cycle. Let me know if the lighting helps. I guess I'll just be waiting and waiting...

    Rhode Island Red Thread!

My girls (still!) aren't laying. In y'all's experience what is the fall/winter slow down? We won't be supplemental lighting, should I not expect eggs until spring?? Say it ain't so! :/ I thought RIRs were great layers??

Mine haven't started either. I've read they might not start until spring now that shorter days are here. Feeling bummed. :(

Hey y'all I was wondering what kind of production slow down you experience this time of year. This is my first year with hens and I'm curious

Free range hens, children and poop?

lol I've read that. We have two dogs and they are supremely uninterested. Weird because they gobble up cat poop when they find it. Maybe they will eventually acquire a taste for it lol
