I have a 52watt cfl bulb in an old brooder lamp plugged into a timer. It comes on a little after 5am so I can see to feed them b4 work n shuts off at 8.
You have no worries. I have had fertile eggs since day 1 n never had nothing growing. Unless it's incubated by a broody hen setting on the egg 24/7 it's not gonna develop
I've never seen the Rangers or the New Hamps before n after looking at breed pics those 2 r as close to looking like what I have. I'm trying to figure out which of these 2 breeds I have. So far they've just laid small eggs every now n again for the last 6 wks which is why I'm wondering if...
Holy Crap!! Your first post from a yr ago was about ur flock of 200 birds being diseased n dying. Now a yr. later u still have a diseased flock? Why do u let the sick birds mingle with the ones that don't seem sick? At this point you seem to have a MAJOR problem n should probly euthanize all the...
I have a simple hook n eye latch on my coop and nothing has climbed up n opened the door in 5yrs. Makes it easy 4 me to lock up at nite without a lite.
Beeners are fairly easy to open n latch n shouldn't b hard 2 bust open if it's iced up in winter.
The double clip in pic 2 can b a bear to open...
LOL! That's my dilemma. I can't tell if they're rangers or New Hamps. When I got my 1st egg at 20wks I thought I had good layers but they are rather sporadic still at 26wks so that has me wondering. Thanx.
Hi folks, I have 3 birds that I bought at TSC 26 wks ago. They will lay once in a while n still sm pullet eggs since they were 20wks. I'm beginning to wonder if I have egg layers or those red ranger broilers. Like I say they were in a tub as red pullets at TSC but we know how that goes.[/IMG] On...
I see. It's ur call but if I was planning on keeping chickens still I would get them now. To me its not as hard on them being shipped now as it is in spring. Plus u don't have to buy as many now.
Good Luck with whatever u choose to do.
That sucks. What do mean by sale ban? Md.(n other states)banned shows like state fairs but not the sale of birds in state. U still have time to order chicks from a hatchery b4 it gets too cold if u want more birds. This time of yr. the min. order is only 15 not 25 with a lot of hatcheries.
I agree with this. If u have a mean rooster attacking the kids they will be tetrified of chickens for the rest of their life. I had a RIR banty roo that would peck my boots everytime. He jumped my 5yr. old son 3 times in 1day. That was it. I got a 1 gal plastic jug n cut the bottom off n nailed...
Birds don't know boundaries so unless there is a physical barrier they will wind up in ur neighbors yard, even if u 'supervise'them. I don't live in a city but my guess is the predator routine would be more nocturnal xcept for hawks simply because thete is more people around during daylite hrs.
Never heard of the orange paint trick so I dunno if that works.
If it's not super hot leaving eggs out til the next day should b ok. I have n no one in my family has been sick if unsure then don't eat em ymmv
Chickens will scratch straw around but they wont be able to spread a whole bale of...
Throw those eggs away. Even if they have not partially developed they have been sitting outside in the heat for 2-3 wks n will likely make u sick. Would u buy a carton of eggs from the store, leave it sit outside for 2wks n then eat them?
I've come up the driveway at 2 in the afternoon n seen birds scattering n squawking. This spring b4 the beans were planted I followed a fox down the field. He had a hen in his mouth. When that happens I keep them in a few days. It mite be all in my head but I think it breaks their routine.
When they r sitting on the nest they will come out to eat n drink at odd intervals. Sometimes u won't even see them. They won't come out to defacate but maybe once or twice either but when they do, phwew!
Once the birds know that the coop is home they usually put themselves 2 bed. My hens also go back in from where they're ranging to lay in the nest boxes also.
Safe? My birds free range they don't stay locked in a coop or kept in a small run. Short of exterminating every living predator both aeriel and afoot, impossible and illegal, they are as safe as any other free ranging bird.
Thanks for the help.
As long as she can't get to another nest to sit on but still has food n water she should be fine. My last broody would bite me so hard I had a blood blister in the web of my hand.
