I appreciate everyone posting on this topic and respect everyone's decisions on how they manage their flocks. I had not previously sought out this topic on BYC because part of me just didn't want to know and another part of me didn't want to be made to feel guilty for the culling we've done on...
So, most stock tank heaters that I know of have their own thermostat that is set to 33-35° F. In my experience, they don't heat the water enough to radiate heat out to keep either style of nipple from freezing. I completely respect that others don't care for aquarium heaters, but they just...
I have been using two 5 gallon buckets with horizontal watering nipples, 2- 50w aquarium heaters per bucket, and a thermocube per bucket for years now. I have never had a heater fail to the point of breaking or shocking the water. I have had heaters start to show condensation inside the glass...
It's the outside of the coop, egg collection door is completely open, the birds enter from the other side. The egg collection opening is about 4" high.
I thought pictures might help.
New nesting bins.
Old set up with 5 gal. buckets.
Still looks the same from the coop side.
So, with larger chickens, as aart advised, they had some issues standing up when laying...so we had a bunch of random placements. Also, after watching several hens, I...
I looked at those but had limited space from my original bucket design, aart told me might be too small...buckets worked up until we got Welsummers and Black Copper Marans that are huge compared to our other girls. Was able to replace buckets with uline bins...
I built an 8' overpass to a new run that isn't finished yet...rethinking the size now, it's 12"x18"x8'. Only have hens, and 4- 8 week old pullets. It is for a second protected run as my wife isn't keen on leaving the girls in the yard during work in case something comes after them.[/IMG]
I currently have a Meade TM005X-M 3-Channel indoor/outdoor thermometer/hydrometer. It came with one remote sensor that I keep in the coop at the roost and I added a TS33F-M Sensor that has a wired probe, which I have on a fishing bobber with a 1/4oz weight in the waterer...so I know if either...
I knew that question was coming and forgot to take a picture this morning...headed out of town so it will probably be Sunday before I can take one.
Only applied to one chicken about a month ago and checked every few days for any issues. Worse issue was that chicken knowing that I was trying to...
Got the tags at gun dog supply:

Sanded all the edges to remove any sharp burrs.
Started the curve on the curved edge of kitchen counter, bent into a "C" by hand.
Carefully continued bend with a pair of soft jaw pliers to prevent marring...worked into...
I've been keeping an eye on whether they have had any issue with getting in and out of them and all has seemed fine to date. I was surprised yesterday to open the egg door and find an Ameraucana and a Buff Orpington crammed into one bucket together.
I modified the 5 gallon bucket concept.
Prized roosting location in upper right.
Suspended off floor to open both doors for clean out. Storage area above nesting boxes, contains automatic waterer reservoir and light controller.
Newbie here. On my way to a well over engineered coop.
I know that I am too lazy to keep up with changing daylight hours on a normal timer. So, for supplemental coop lighting, I did something similar that would reset itself daily with no effort on my part.
Technical sketch.
LED light strips...
