I have a friend who gave me some Styrofoam insulation for shipping cold items. I duct taped it into a box and added a window using glass from a $1 picture frame. The light fixture cost $2.00 and the fan and wiring I had on hand. The only real expense was the thermostat and...
Well, about 28 days ago I built an incubator out of styrofoam and duct tape. I have approx. $50 in it for the thermostat/thermometer. There were days I let it run out of water. There were days the temp swung +- 5 degrees from 99.5. I put 9 RIR eggs in and hoped for the best. I candled them on...
Cowgirl up!
No, seriously. What's it look like? If it is non-venomous, you could run it out of there with a broom, hoe, shovel, etc. If it is venomous, you should let it be until someone with experience with venomous reptiles can remove it. Chickens can be replaced, you cannot!
I have a hen that is setting on a clutch of eggs. Her comb and wattles are getting pale and I suspect lice. I've dusted my other hens with Sevin. Is it okay to dust her and give her some Ivomec?
Thank you.

I'm working on an Avon-inator. I took an Avon box and lined the inside and lid with a layer of bubble wrap. I still have to get all the rest of the components installed but I thought I'd mention it. I think the bubble wrap will help with insulation and keep the cardboard from being effected by...
OP, sorry about your loss.
However... the reactions of a lot of people on this forum are very concerning. Is this site in any way affiliated with any of the animal rights terrorist groups in our country?
Good luck is right. OP, you're about to be flamed by PETC (People for the Ethical Treatment of Chickens) aka the ACLU (American Chicken Liberties Union). It was nice knowing you and may God be with you.
Thank you for the reply. It has two wafer thermostats in it. Could you tell me how to calibrate them also, in case the thermometer is correct.
Thanks again.
Also, it looks like a meat thermometer. How would I adjust it if it is off?
I'm using a very old (20+ years) GQF cabinet incubator. My friend just hatched about 70+ quail last week with it. I've had it set up at my house for the last three days and it seems stable at 102 - 103 degrees F, by the old thermometer that comes with it. I understand that the egg temp must be...
My BO roo died last week and my 4 ladies have been laying good but none of them want to go broody so I took 25 eggs to a friend to incubate. I have about 20 or so more eggs this week so I borrowed an old (20+ years old) GQF cabinet bator from another friend. I plan on setting whatever eggs I...
You guys are AWESOME!!!
So could I take a clean legged pullet and breed her back to her father (clean legged roo)?
The hen these came off of is has slightly feathered legs, but the roo does not.
I have some mutt "teenagers" that have some sort of American GameFowl and some sort of feather-footed (don't know if it is brahma or cochin) in them. Can the feather-foot gene be bred out of them? I have a roo that is the color of a light brahma but built like a gamefowl (He is absolutely...
I was looking at a coop on Horizon Structures website (the 8x8) and it says it is built to accomodate up to 30 birds. How can this be? If you're supposed to allow 4 sq ft/bird and an 8'x8' structure is only 64 sq ft, that only come up to 16 birds. Can some one explain this to me?
Thanks in advance.
I have about 10 - 12 eggs under a broody hen due on Sept. 17. She looks like some kind of cornish cross and the roo is american game (i think).
We'll see what we get.
