    Sexing eggs!

The eggs are from several different hens as I have h flock of around 100 layers. I haven't given up quite yet and will get a bit more scientific a bit later on. Yes I was a little bit disappointed but in the last batch where I had more females than males, the eggs were slightly less in volume.

    Sexing eggs!

Hello everyone, well the results are in....for the time being anyway. So I had 22 chicks hatch from randomly selected eggs. The result, 11 male and 11 female. This is what I would normally see over a season. I have chosen hatching eggs for size, shape and general quality. Now for the...

    Sexing eggs!

Well I'm close to completing the first round of trialing. The final lot of eggs are due to hatch later today or tomorrow. So far this is what I have..... Batch number 1 resulted in 11 live chicks from randomly selected eggs. At this stage there are 5 definite males and 5 definite females. 1 I...

    Broody came off..

Oh no....I've had a broody hen leave her nest too. By the time I found this out approx 12 hours had gone by. All the eggs hatched just a little delayed in the incubator. If the eggs are moving just leave them for now. From rocking to hatch can take some time so try and be patient. Try and get...

    Sexing eggs!

Quick update! My broody hen has hatched eggs from the first of my selected eggs (post #162) 11 from 12 eggs. The 12th made it to pip but didn't progress and was DIS this morning. The second broody is due in a weeks time. It will be interesting and I have to admit, a little bit exciting.

    Sexing eggs!

I'm in the middle of it. The first three broodies hatched 23 live chicks. At an early assessment given that the oldest of these chicks are 14 days old, there are quite a few males. These were from randomly selected eggs. Since I joined this thread the eggs that I originally photographed and...

    Sexing eggs!

Just had the most terrible hatches from the last three broodies. So we have 24 chicks at this stage from randomly selected eggs. The next three are from selected eggs. Let's hope we end up with a reasonable result from these.

    Sexing eggs!

I'm not sure about others but I'll know in about six weeks or so once I can sex the chicks and do a comparison. There are some studies done scientifically but none in real depth that I can find. I think so much of the evidence is anecdotal which is why there are mixed views on this. It appears...

    2nd incubation no chicks

Sorry to read this. Once you know it could be the temperature, you will go on to have successful hatches. It's just that you can't rely on some machines to be accurate all of the time. I have got brinsea incubators, and even with their reliability, I calibrate every season just to check. I...

    2nd incubation no chicks

Yes I agree, to have chicks hatching at this late time, temperature will be the culprit more than likely. I would be tempted to raise the temp now to try and assist any other late chicks. This is a last resort and then before setting anymore buy another thermometer of good quality as a...

    2nd incubation no chicks

Is your incubator fan or still air? Is it digital? Do you have any independent thermometers in your incubator? So many incubators are inaccurate with temperatures and humidity and you should always have at least two further gauges to check in my experience. A zero hatch, in my opinion generally...

    Sexing eggs!

Thanks LG.... The hen has taken to the eggs nicely after thinking about it for 24 hours . The second lot of chicks have started to hatch under a first time broody. She had proven to be clumsy.... Two chicks squashed in shells and one injured. 4 pipped eggs removed and incubator fired up. A...

day 23 and still no pip

In addition, all I can suggest at this late stage is to turn up the heat on your incubator. My guess, and that is all it is, is that your incubator was around 1.5 degrees to low. It may help. Whatever you do there are less chances of successful healthy chicks hatching. Even in the most...

day 23 and still no pip

Yes I agree Amy. Heat before humidity will be the defining feature for a bad hatch especially if the hatch is late. As Amy has suggested purchase a couple of extra good quality thermometers and use them to regulate and check. You will more than likely find that the temperature in the incubator...

day 23 and still no pip

Is your incubator fan assisted or still air? If it is a still air incubator, was the thermometer just slightly above the eggs? Or is it a digital incubator? Humidity sounds right if the hygrometer is accurate. It is late now for successful hatches I'm afraid. Was the chick in the egg you...

    Sexing eggs!

Just a quick update. This is the second lot of selected eggs going under a broody. Hopefully she will sit. The first chicks arrived here yesterday under broody number 1. She had 12 eggs, all were fertile, 11 hatched, one pipped but through a vein by the looks of it and died. These are chicks...

Correct If this hen decides to sit tight. She failed to last week but is showing interest again.

Help! About to incubate for the 1st time & recevied double the hatching eggs asked for - feeling ov

Hey... Oh rats... It is always sad when one doesn't make it. I would suggest though that by and large you have had a successful hatch and it shouldn't deter you from future hatching. My dad was a great stockman with a really good eye for animal welfare. He passed a huge lot of advice on to me...

    Sexing eggs!

I'll keep it going here in New Zealand because it is spring. The broody hen that I am using for the experiment in my post above is sitting tight. He first week is nearly complete. It will be interesting to compare her "selected" eggs and the ones already under a further 4 broody hens. Two...

Help! About to incubate for the 1st time & recevied double the hatching eggs asked for - feeling ov

Yes was wondering that myself.... I rarely see them now but your tip on putting them in a cup is a great idea Amylynn. I think I may have had three over the years. The last one ruptured before I saw it and didn't survive.
