Oh wow, geez, more of an attack wound than just ripped skin. Now I see, these are young birds and you can't tell yet? It certainly couldn't be roosters then, prob more like you said a hawk. You may have to administer antibiotics for a few days if a puncture wound is there. Do you have some...
Put her in a bin of warm water, add some CH and soak for 10-15 minutes and gently wash her wound side completely. Pat her as dry as you can and put her under a heat lamp to dry off completely. Cut off all the feathers that keep getting in the way.
Why are the feathers sticking to her wound...
I'm not too keen about antibacterials either, as in hand soaps, household products etc., and Clorox is so toxic. But I'm very pleased to have discovered this stuff. It's literally a lifesaver for wound cleaning and has so many applications. Plus there is no fume or smell to it, which is another...
I agree, no bandage. That flap of skin is not going to fully make it. If you can make a stitch or two to make it stay up a little that's better, but a bandage isn't going to be helpful in the long run. Could hinder the healing process. I found the thinnest needle possible and used dental floss...
LOL, that's a good sign! Gives you something to clean off. I have a hen, Olga, that lived in the house for almost a year! I knew it was time to figure out how to re-acclimate her after she kept getting in the flower bed outside the front door to take bath. She'd come in and shake off all the dirt!
Chlorhexidine is truly an amazing wound cleanser and anti-infectant. I was reading the reviews on Amazon and concurred. Yeah, I see it's available as a mouth rinse, and it also in pet shampoo, bird cage cleaner and reptile cage cleaner and barn cleaner. There's another solution a bit stronger...
Mine was wearing a saddle as well. It was definitely the rooster's spur. Some of those young roosters are rough! I would put her in a bin and bath her to get all the honey off of her. Set her in some warm water, they like it, and keep pouring warm water over her back to dilute and wash off...
You can try to suture it in a place or two but that's about it. It does help but like you said, it's not stretchy enough to go back where it was. Shrinks quick. One thing I would advise is to not use anymore iodine. NONE. I myself had always used Betadine for wounds on my horses, so I did use...
When I first began using it, the stuff was great. It smelled good, had a rich golden brown appearance, and evenly balanced with the peas and other grains, and my hens did great. As time passed it just seemed to have a few blips in consistency and then it just became a pale powdered mess. I did...
One of my young hens at one time had an entire flap of skin hanging off one of her sides. The rooster did it with his spur. I took her to the vet, thought she could stitch it up, but no, she said she'd cut the skin off and I'd periodically bring her back to have the edges 'etched' for new...
Yeah, TS was supposed to get it in August. I'll be needing to buy some feed this week. I'll call NB and see what happened. The mgr of sales is who I spoke with. He promised it'd be in TS in August so I'll tell you what he says. I've used the Manno Pro before, but for some reason chickens don't...
I had always been using Natures Best Organic pellet as a "supplement" so that is the one I ultimately switched to. I would like to use a soy-free pellet, and NB is supposed to have come out with one available in August but I have not checked Tractor Supply yet. I may just stick to what I'm using.
Quick update, knock on wood, flock has been grain free for 2+ months, pellets only and they all have shown signs of looking better, eggshells look better, good poops, and zero crop problems. (now here comes molting season!) I'm very glad to have switched over to pellets. I always thought it was...
If you have a BCM rooster and an Ameraucana/Araucana blue egg layer (like the one in my profile pic) (or any hen that lays blue eggs) you can hatch her blue eggs and will have black hens that lay olive eggs. I read that combination on here, but specifically said Ameraucana hen w/BCM roo. Since I...
Yes, according to NB salesman (i think he was the mgr of sales) he said TS had not yet approved the product on their "reset". This year it did get approved, but not in time for their spring 'reset', but in August when TS gets another reset, it will then begin to be shipped. They will carry both...
Interesting. I'll have to take a look at that. My hens don't forage, so I yes, I supplement them with 'things' from the kitchen and outdoor, like chickweed, japanese beetles. But yeah, when I first got the flock I looked so forward to having them around the pasture, and yard, then along came the...
I spoke to them and was told TS will be selling it in August. I posted about it a few posts up. You can special order from SS only if it's an independent dealer that can make special orders from the Bagged Feed Warehouse.
