Hello everyone!
I randomly tried to incubate a balut duck egg from my local market and to my surprise, it actually hatched yesterday regardless of being stored at strange temperatures, having a detached air cell, etc. I had to assist as it pipped in only one spot for 48 hours and the shell did...
I agree with Eggcessive.. This might seem cruel but putting this chick down is actually the "right" thing to do in terms of suffering. Poor baby must be in so much pain right now..
In your 2nd picture, I see that perhaps the side of the chick's face is also bloody? Is this due to the open wound...
How fascinating! This makes me want to try to cross different breeds later on to see if I can do what you did!
They were laid on 07/20 and incubated that same day. I'm sad to say that I believe the misshapen one is not fertilized ):
All the other 3 have that little red ring but I can't see it...
You don’t even know what your response means to me. Thank you so much for saying this because this egg was fertilized upon candling!
You’ve eased my nerves big time and I learned something today. This is the best community and I’m so lucky to get to be a member here.
Thanks so much!
Oh no.. this scares me! Are there any benefits to having a rooster? I'm not really in it for fertile eggs as I don't plan on having more than 3-4 chickens but a part of me really wants a rooster.. just because they are so beautiful. Do they really protect their girls?
I have a set of Lavender...
This is such an amazing answer! I love this so much and completely forgot that you can select certain traits you'd like! Let's say I had an Easter Egger that was laying small eggs, would I then breed it with a Minorca rooster or another breed that lays jumbo eggs? I'm not at this level yet but...
Quick question! Do you find it hard to rehome cockerels?! The lady I got my eggs from said she had a really hard time.. even if they were free. ):
I really, really don't want to hurt these babies so I'm a bit worried.
How often you do hatch eggs and in your experience, what has been the ratio of pullets to cockerels? I know it's about 50:50 but I always love hearing from others
This is my fear.. I only want 3 hens. I'd be so sad if they all turned out to be Roo's as I do end up getting attached to my chickens. Just thinking about it is heartbreaking. The lady I was got the eggs from also only does straight run though. Is the process at least "fun" ?! I plan on having...
What about chicks that I can pick up locally? My main reason for hatching the chicks is because I wanted to experience the process.. but after receiving my eggs yesterday, am feeling a bit down. I was only able to get 4, with one being a bit mishapen. Of the 4, only one of them weighs 52 grams...
What beautiful girls! This makes me want chicks all the more! The whole incubating process is also iffy and I'm not even sure what's going to come out.
You're so right!
Hello everyone! :frow
I am a previously retired chicken lady that recently decided to get back into the game (aka I moved, had to give my girls away to a beautiful farm sanctuary, and now have my own home so I can raise chickens again).
Back then, I'd just buy chicks from either my local feed...
This is the absolute best post on here and your pictures give me so much joy. I can see how loved your girls (both of the human and poultry variety ;)) are! Seriously, I've never had such a huge smile while reading a post!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post all your wonderful...
Does anyone know if an egg like this will hatch or should I just toss it?
I drove 30 minutes only for the lady to tell me that her girls didn't lay that many eggs that day and may be heat stressed. They're Lavender Orpies but I'm afraid it might burst? It's my first time so I'm trying to figure...
Thank you so, so much for your honesty!
Whoa, that is AMAZING!
I'd a tad bit sad because I drove from Baldwin Park to Glendora and it seems like these eggs might not be viable. One is a wonky-looking egg, 2 are porous, and one seems okay.
Her Orpies were just beautiful though and she usually...
They are so, so beautiful though! It really is so hard to just stick with one breed.. I want them all ): However, I can only keep 3 right now and it pains me!
Also, I'm going to follow your hatching thread link hehe (:
