So this past Wednesday we moved Consuela and her cage back out to the coop. And since we are in Michigan and it's been awesome weather, it snowed and got cold.
BUT, we put her out there anyway with Maria. They were ok at first; we gave them each thawed corn and layer crumble, then went next door...
49 days later. She doesn't like to be fussed with, so it was hard getting a good picture. The part in red is that weird nub thing she started growing from the get-go.
I noticed the skin this weekend, and it was just at her tail, about half that size? Maybe Thursday was when I noticed.
Also, she's had full use of the cage since late last week because she had jumped out, and rather than deal with that, I chucked the box.
This pic was taken yesterday. Approx four weeks after her attack. She's still feisty, eating, talking and living in her box in the cage.
When she gets skin over her back, she'll get the full use of the cage, sans box.
No infection so far. I think we're out of the woods as far as that goes.
she is doing great. she still doesn't have the skin on her back grown back yet, but she eats and eats and poops and poops! she's in good spirits, chatty and feeling like she can jump out and walk around. i don't let her (poopfoot on carpet? no thanks) because i think she should spend her energy...
I took Consuela to the vet today to have her checked over. So far so good. He used the laser again on her, and said as long as she's peppy, eating, clean and active, she'd do great.
No infection at this point still, and there's significant reconstruction happening on day 12!
He doesn't think...
So I have an update thread in the stories of my chickens portion. Link here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/the-little-chicken-who-will.1213863/
She's doing fine still, and is eating and drinking. I give her layer crumble, frozen peas and corn and I've been trying eggs- I hardboiled...
Here are the photos of her injuries to date- it's only been a week:
Initial Dec. 23
Taken the next day (Dec. 24) to really see severity:
These are a week after the attack, taken this morning (Dec. 30):
under wing:
So Consuela has seen a vet this past Tuesday, and she is eating, drinking, and pooping just fine. Her back is looking so.much.better. although it's still pretty jacked up. I was looking at the initial pix v the ones from just today, and in a week, she appears to have made some progress. Still...
So the number one lesson in keeping chickens: listen to your gut.
She was alone, and winter was coming in Michigan, and she was not keen on being a house chicken. Looking back, I could have probably gotten some chicks to slip under her at night since she was the only one to go broody, but I...
This is the "story" of Consuela Conchita, my little chola.
She's an ISA brown. I got her as a baby from TSC with 3 sisters in March of 2013. I'd say she was about a week older than the other 3 because she had like, 4 feathers on her wings while the others were mostly fuzz.
They were my first...
your post that was deleted (not by me) was straight up nasty. and judgmental. so since apparently you missed the point of the first post i made and in that deleted post, assumed a lot, let me reiterate my facts:
it was saturday night. i found consuela at 5:15 pm. dec. 23rd. no vets open, and...
so we just got back from the vet. i was prepared to have her euthanized, but he thinks she will be fine. he said i've been doing everything i can correctly, with the exception of he prefers chlorohexadine. so he gave me some of that to use 2-3 times a day.
he said the fact that she's eating...
Stop.
I didn't come here for "expert advice".
I didn't pose my issue to start fights or to be judged, or to be made to feel like a horrible person because my chicken is paying the price for free ranging.
I came here for help in an emergency at the worst possible time of the year.
I...
