Watering your chickens in the winter

Interesting. Do they not drip when the hen presses on the nipples? Ha, I guess nothing is fool proof, but I'll check those out. Thank you.

Watering your chickens in the winter

Even outside? I have seen some horizonal nipples with attached cups that hold water that would freeze, that was why we didn't start with those and we were afraid our high winds would keep them full of sand and debris. Are they for inside use only. We worry about dripping on our wood floor. So...

Watering your chickens in the winter

outside We are in Fallon, Nevada and won't have night temps above freezing until Spring so we used a birdbath heater last year in our five gallon buckets with nipples. The nipples often froze and because we put a splash of ACV in their water, the heater corroded. We will probably go to bowls...

RID lice shampoo for scaly legs?

Is the hen isolated for this treatment or left in the coop? I'm visualizing the litter and dirt collecting on that salve or oil being used. How often is it removed and reapplied? I have 12 hens and just planning ahead in case.

Comment by 'KarennFallon' in article 'Mites & Lice Treatment And Prevention'

Not sure I actually have a problem yet, but, reading up on it now and they are BIRDS, how can we not eventually have to face this?! My best layer has stopped laying so I'm suspecting I may be having a problem. My particular situation is that I have no space to set up an alternate coop for 12...

    Deep litter method

I'm still learning about all this chicken stuff. Why doesn't the DLM method encourage lice and mites, just something to hide and grow in? I understand the use of DE, but I'm told that it discourages pests but doesn't kill them.

Comment by 'KarennFallon' in article 'Sludge: a chicken's form of Starbucks'

What a great idea! How often do you give them this or any treats for that matter? I've read that scratch and other foods on the ground can get contaminated by poop and cause diseases. This obviously would be in a dish. My girls get the pellet style food, not sure my blender will like that, and...

I am so impressed with the all the work that went into this coop design! The walkways and the different pens all inside. Mine is just an 8x10x8 plywood coop left from some previous renter and we had to do some work to get it useable. Anyway, I've used some of you methods modified to fit my...

    Bedding besides straw or shavings

I have always used straw, but have been using shavings to use up what was left of a huge brick I got for the new chicks. I just worry about the pine shavings not decomposing in my garden. In the 5 yrs we have lived in the desert, I have found that straw, leaves and peat that you would normally...

How often do you clean your coop?

Every day or two, after I have finished using the pooper scooper to clean the yard from my dogs, I head into the chicken run to clean up after my 12 chickens. I talk to the girls, cover any holes they dig near the fences, make sure feeders and waters are full, and keep an eye on general...

Topic of the Week - Building a Chicken Coop

We inherited an old 8x8 chicken coop with 8x16 ft run in the yard when we rented this old farmhouse and was thrilled when the landlord said we could use it if we wanted. It only had 2 4 ft roosts and no boxes so I used 2 milk crates in on the floor, which was fine for my 4 hens. Now my...

Your reply on size difference made me hold out a bit longer before blending my new girls in with my 2 older hens. Thank you that was a wise move that worked well.

What time do your chickens put themselves to bed?

My run is enclosed so I leave my coop open to the run 24/7, even in winter snows. The girls come and go as they please, so I'm not there to shut them in, or open at any particular time. But I have noticed that my layers are in before sundown, my teens linger longer, but are in before completely...

Comment by 'KarennFallon' in article 'Reintegrating a Recovered Hen to a Small Flock:'

This year I had a first time situation of adding 10 6 wk old chicks to my few older hens and one rooster. Since my run is good sized, I was able to fence off 2/3 of my run. The smaller part for the three hens and 1 roo and the larger for the 10 kids. I put a couple of wire dog crates in for the...

Comment by 'KarennFallon' in article 'Reintegrating a Recovered Hen to a Small Flock:'

I wanted to add this comment as I had asked about reintroducing a sick hen to the flock a year ago. I threw caution to the wind and put her back in the coop in the daytime so I could rescue her if needed. No problem, just like she had always been there. I do have a good sized run for a few hens...

    Buyer Beware!!!...Chicken Coops NW

To all of you wonderful more experienced backyarders, what is a good ratio of chickens to coop and run size? I have a 8 x 8 ft. coop with an 8 x 24 ft run. How many chickens do you recommend in that size?

Have your chickens tasted your blood?

I know that chickens are carnivorous and to be careful, but mine have been quite tame-ish and I've never given it a second thought. Ha! Thank you for the reminders.

    I need rooster 101

I loved my 1 yr old Bantam Cochin rooster, so handsome, but he was brutal when mating, he even dislocated one hen's hip. Got 10 new chicks this year and since I only want eggs, he was relocated to another farm. Didn't want him hurting one of the 9 wk olds in his male bravado.
