We just hatched some chicks under a broody hen, we have previously used an incubator. Postman was very rough with the box and hatch rate was terrible.
We have two healthy chicks with mum and a third hatched this morning, found it in the laying box abandoned I think, it was half covered and had...
We are hatching 12 eggs that were posted. They were pretty poorly handled with the postman swinging the box as he walked to the house. We put half in the incubator and half under a broody hen as we thought 12 would be too many for her (never used a broody before) and she had been broody for a...
Hello,
Long story, on short father in law came over while I was at work with his dog which has attacked our barred rock.
The chicken is now safe in the coop/small run, mainly hiding in the corner. She did walk around a when I came in there and didn't seem obviously distressed/unwell.
Given...
Long story short. We have a small flock of 3, lost one to a fox and got a new girl. Things were as you'd expect for a couple of weeks and everything seemed fine.
All of a sudden the new girl (plymouth rock) is been kept away/picked on by the Araucana who never paid much attention when...
Hello,
Currently I have only two chickens after losing one to a fox, so I have just got another. Perhaps wrongly I have skipped quarantine, I know the owner it came from and it is only a block from my place
The flock (if you can call it that) is an Ancona and Araucana and have just got barred...
I had my Barred Rock hen taken a week ago, I am assuming by a fox I chased it off just too late, dog must not have heard it.
Anyway.
A friend said they knew someone looking to get rid of a pullet about 20 weeks old. I picked it up last night in the dark in a box. Looking at it today it appears...
A friend dropped off their dog today to play with our dog (which is well trained around the chooks) while we were out, we came home to find their dog cowering guiltily inside and our black Ancona laying in the yard. Not sure what happened exactly.
Anyway.
The Ancona has some feathers...
One of my girls laid her first egg. Right in the middle of winter. Fairly excited as it's my first one ever.
Looks like it is from my barred rock, can't believe it laid before the Ancona and araucana!
Been lucky to find someone to take my red Ancona rooster and also my Barnevelder for breeding. Just checking I have the sex right on the Barnevelders as I'd hate to give away a pullet or not give away a roo.
I think the first one is a pullet and the second pic a roo. He was always bigger...
My chicks are now about 9 weeks old and seem to be doing well. Only issue is their sleeping location they have selected.
It's on a small landing at the entrance to the coop, I've attached an image below. It was OK when they were smaller, the photo is around 3 weeks of age. But now they are so...
Trying to work out what kind of feed I will give my laying hens. Is there some way to identify which foods are better? I.e what is a good protein range? Fat etc? I have noticed chick starter had the most protein and my grower is min 16%. I have seen layer pellets from 12% protein to above 20%...
This first one is Rock, no idea if it's a he/she. Did feather a little slower than the rest of the mixed flock. I'm leaning to roo.
This is duck my araucana (Australian) not sure how to sex him/her
Hannibal (Barnevelder) and Poppy (red Ancona) 99% sure they are roos, which I can't keep :-(...
It's my first time with chickens, so far hatching eggs has been an adventure to get to this point! Anyway.
I've put my four week old chicks outside to spend the night for the first time. It's plenty warm been summer so I'm not worried about that.
I've read that I should confine them to the...
At what age can you sex.
Ancona
Araucana
Barnevelder
Barred Plymouth rock
I've been told you can sex Ancona's at 3 weeks by red (male) or yellow (female) comb, is that correct/reliable?
My rock didn't sit strongly as male or female on sight sexing so "rock" is still a mystery.
When would it...
Lots of posts on this - barred rock sight sexing. My first six chicks hatched yesterday and one is a barred rock but couldn't decide although leaning to a Male from what I've read :(
Just wondering if a brooder can be too big, especially for day old chicks? My heat lamp would only bring a small area to the recommend temperature which I was thinking would be OK if I put their food and water in that area. Or is it better to restrict access to a smaller area for the first few...
I have read that you should wash/clean eggs before incubating them. Today I read something saying they have a natural protective coating (?wax) and that you shouldn't wash them, this was written about duck eggs and not chicken however.
So, should you clean both, neither or are they different?
Here they are resting after arriving in the mail today.
Barnevelders x5
Ancona's x5
Barred rocks x5
Araucana's x3
This is my second try at hatching. I had a faulty thermometer the first time and only one survived the first few days. This time I'm hoping to do much better!
Incubator has been...
I just got a new incubator and it has an automatic turning tray inside. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working. I have connected the wire that goes from the lid to the little motor and nothing. The instructions noted that it doesn't turn for the first 1:59 (no more info in the basic...
