    On Bedding and Cleaning

We use sand on the coop floor, and fine shavings in the nesting boxes. There are usually some shavings that make it to the coop floor. In the beginning we used shavings on the floor but we then stripped out all the bedding every 2-3 weeks, it was a pretty big chore since our coop is fairly...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

It's been a while since I posted, my health is kicking my butt. I am sad to say that I lost my bantam frizzle, she was more of a pet to me so sad. My other half built me a new run off the coop and apparently something was able to get under and when I found her all that was left was her rump area...

Yes it is too bad. Lucky for me other half is a carpenter for a construction company so he can do the work, only problem is they are so busy at work with all the hurricane damage that he has been working lots of hours.

No damage to animal quarters only our house roof, and it got fixed by my other half straight away, but we still have some dry walling to do inside.

    Irma aftermath

We just got power back, we had no running water since the pump went off, got quite a few looks from the neighbors and traffic because we soaped up and then jumped into the pool to rinse off. Luckily we keep a few cases of bottled water on hand for these situations. The heat was bad for me, I...

    Irma aftermath

Yes God was watching over us. The eye hit land 100 miles southwest of us then turned north and went right over us, and by the time it hit us it was down to a #3 instead of a 4 or 5, so we fortunate.

    Irma aftermath

We survived Irma, the eye passed right over us. We had no injuries to people or animals, the coop that Mike built withstood the 80-90 mph gusts, and the sheep hunkered in the bard all ok. We did have a bit of roof damage on the house, and lost some siding, but the barns held strong. The after...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I have been away for a little while, had some health issues. During that time I had to cut back on all our farm animals as I was too sick to keep up with them all. So I am now turkeyless, and I sold a whole coop of hens with their rooster to a family down the road, I also sold all my 3-8 week...

    Raising Baby Chick-Along

I give SAV-A_CHICK in the water for the first day. Other than that just starter crumble. One in a while if they seem to need a boost I hard boil an egg and add a tiny bit of mashed yolk in crumble, leave it for an hour and then remove and put back straight crumble.

putting more chicks under broody hen with current chicks

Three days might not make a difference, but I wouldn't risk it if it is more than 3 days. I would stick em under momma hen after they dry in the evening. By morning all should be well. I don't think the dud eggs are necessary.

    Integrating new chicks

Put em together within the next few days as soon as you are sure the new ones are healthy. Keep an eye on them for the first few hours, remember even chicks have a pecking order, as long as they are not over bullying the smaller ones they should be fine.

Thought I would share some up-dated pics of the birds. Ole red and chicks none of which are from her own eggs. I got 2 black chicks & 3 yellows so they are from the new rooster and the Orpington cross hens. Here is one of the rooster when he first came and now he has developed a little...

So we finally got several days of much needed rain, whatever is going to grow back will. Chances are we will have to seed parts of the pasture to help it recover. I had three broody hens I couldn't break so I gave them each 2 eggs to sit on, 5 chicks were born today one other egg didn't make...
