Moving chicks out in WARM CLIMATE

I was wondering the same thing. I live in Austin and have 6 4 week olds that I moved to the coop at about 1 week at the end of January. At about 2 weeks old I started letting them in the run during the day and they LOVE it. Last night I decided to turn off they're heating pad (I'm using the mama...

I just finished painting the newly upgraded roost, poop board, and ladder my husband built yesterday along with the inside trim for the 3 windows he cut out. Still have to hammer in the 1/4in mesh for the windows, but I'm so glad I asked for advice and had him provide more ventilation. We're...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I have a very cozy brooder box in my house with the momma heating pad in full effect and it's going really well, but I have one chick with a case of the pasty butt. I've soaked a rag in hot water and tried to remove it that way, but I couldn't get it all off. What should I do next? She was...

Thanks, Jack---yes, I agree the boards should be 2X4's, but this is what we had and we plan on adding supports to the both of them. They are removable right now and i agree they need to be away from the wall a few more inches. Since it'll be a few months (I'm guessing) til they'll be getting...

Here it is! All that's left is the poop board installation, but I couldn't wait to post an update. My husband spent the weekend building this brooder/poop board/roost get-up in the coop using reclaimed materials we had from previous projects and I couldn't be happier with it. Thanks again to...

Thanks SO MUCH for the advice! This definitely has me brainstorming ideas for a roost/poopboard/brooder underneath situation. And that side exhaust fan is a brilliant idea!

I love the idea of another pop door and I have the space to install another one opposite the existing one--there's room for another run and everything. When I mentioned this to my husband last week, he gave me "the look", haha. So, maybe next year! I'd like to keep all the supplies in here...

Thanks for the tip! The largest window is the east facing one on the door--it's covered w carpenters mesh and can be opened and closed. I plan on leaving it open most of the time. I'm thinking 2 nesting boxes for 6 hens. Right?

Well, it's been decided that we need to cut out another window or two but I think we can wait til it gets warmer since the baby chicks will be in their brooder out here after about the first week. And I'm thinking I like the plastic nesting boxes made by Miller Manufacturing--they're ventilated...

Yeah, I figured I'd need another window but didn't want to cut a hole on the north side in the winter while they'd be so small since we're brooding them out here. And thanks for the advise on installing the roosts on that back wall. I didn't think about how much room they'd need getting on and...

Here is the latest photo of our 8x12 shed (with electricity) we've decided to turn into a coop for 6 hens. We're getting the day old chicks on the 19th and I plan on using the Mama Heating Pad system in our house for about the first week before moving them out here. We had a couple of mild...

It's pretty shaded by trees in this part of our yard, but what would you suggest we put on top of the run for shade?

Yes! We have a couple windows on that west facing wall, up top. And the door has a couple windows we can open, too. If I've learned anything from all my research, it's the importance of ventilation and dryness. Thank you and I welcome any and all suggestions!

EEEEEKK!! I'm so excited to pick up our day old baby chicks in exactly 2 weeks from Ideal Poultry in Cameron, TX! We've repurposed this metal shed with insulation and plywood walls to house our 6 new hens. I'm planning on using the "heating pad/cave method", aka mama heating pad, to keep them...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I've learned so much from this thread! I'm ordering my heating pad today and am picking up our 6 baby chicks on the 19th. The coop/run is nearly finished--just have to seal the floor of the coop and buy all the supplies. I began getting nervous about having a light on them 24/7, the dust in the...
