    Coops for the Severely Unhandy

I was thinking of using a calf hut for goslings this spring/summer. What do you think makes more sense, a calf hut or a hoop house? I am from the Hudson Valley NYS.

    Chinese gander over Toulouse goose

One year I had a Toulouse gander over Embden geese and some of those birds are saddlebacks.

    Chinese gander over Toulouse goose

This in one older photo you can see some of the crosses in the foreground and you can also see some pure Toulouse and Embden. I have a really good video but I can’t figure out how to post it.

    Chinese gander over Toulouse goose

If you’re working with real pure bred birds I think what you find out that the females are white and the males are white with black splotches. In my last two years I see birds which have a solid gray and I suspect that one of my parents are not pure bred. I tend to keep back one or two birds...

    Chinese gander over Toulouse goose

Thanks. The crosses were not impressive table birds, I will not Perdue that. Embden ganders over Toulouse geese give excellent table birds.

    Breed ID??

I am getting some photos of these birds tomorrow, But in general I think I prefer to deal with people who actually know the genetics of their birds. I like to be precise. I do crosses but in a defined way so I know who the parents are.

    Chinese gander over Toulouse goose

I am purchasing some birds from a mixed flock, a trio of Toulouse plus one White Chinese gander. I do not want to retain any Chinese genetics in my breeding program. What are the best ways to tell the difference between pure Toulouse and a cross between a white Chinese gander and a Toulouse...

    Breed ID??

I would love to know what the white Chinese GanderLooks like especially compared to pure Toulouse. I will be looking at geese from a mixed flock and it is important to me to know which ones are mixed. Could you please direct me to your friend on Instagram.

Easiest way to mark eggs from hens?

I have used blue coat successfully. I just spray some on the vent and make sure I let it dry before the bird walks off. Of course that only gives you one bird at a time. It is possible to buy nests which close behind the birds so that you can collect eggs and know that they are from individual...

    Marking Geese with bright colors

I raise geese for the table. I have 3 families. All of my ganders are Embden. One family has all Embden girls and the other two families have both Embden and French Toulouse girls. The parents are labeled with colored zip ties. I have a blue and a red and a yellow family. I have used various...

Day 26 of duck incubation questions.

Occasionally I have had birds that seem to suffocate just before Hatch. Sometimes if the air cell rolls down the bird will die. There are a lot of things that can go wrong in that last day.

I do it all the time.

Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Incubate/Hatch at Home?

I raise birds for the table. You get a lot more offspring out of a small flock if you incubate then if you allow them to brood and hatch. And I don’t want to simply buy birds and raise them for the table because I raise heritage breeds not “meat birds”. I also choose breeding stock each year to...

    Different sets of duck eggs

It may seem like a lot of trouble but it’s really ideal to have a dedicated incubator for lockdown. It is really not a great idea to open the incubator multiple times a day during lockdown. Also the incubator gets pretty dirty as eggs hatch. If you’re not planning on incubating very many eggs...

If im supposed to turn eggs 3 times a day, does the time i set it count as one turn?

There’s actually a scientific study of rotating goose eggs. They compared rotating along the short axis versus routine along the long axis and there was a significant advantage if you rotate along the short axis. It is better not to do it randomly, sometimes less sometimes right. Of course...

    Turning duck eggs?

The reason they suggest four times a day by hand is because nobody’s going to turn their eggs every two hours by hand. I’m surprised they recommend four times a day by hand because normally people recommend an odd number of turns because they assume that night time is the longest period of not...

    Forgot to stop turning!!

Time will tell but I have done that myself and ended up with healthy birds. Personally I determine the time to stop turning eggs by candling them once a day in the last five days. When I see shadowing indicating internal piping I move them to lock down I find that particularly important for...
