Those are great pictures. Thanks for posting them. I have 5 Baikals and have not had any nesting yet. I am hoping this year it will happen. This is one of my favorite ducks.
I know this is an old thread but I hope others will post more pics and info about the species.
Thanks for the quick reply. I lost my hen over a year ago and I can not find anyone on this side of the Rockies that raises them any more.I know a couple other people that are also looking. I don't get on this site much anymore because it seems like there are few people using it unfortunatly.
I have a Wood Duck hen that tries to mate with many species and females of other species. I have seen her mate with a Northern Pintail and she produced one Pintail/Wood Duck cross in all the years I have had her. All of her other babies have been pure Wood Duck.
Thank you. Both are setting in their own boxes now. The first one should hatch this week. I was going to let the hen raise her own ducklings, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this. I often let the mallards raise their own, but I have had bad luck leting Cinnamon teal raise...
I have 2 pair of Wood Ducks and they are both using the same nest box. I have 3 boxes set up in the aviary. I would guess that there is not much I can do, but does anyone have experience with this? One of them has started lining the nest with down, and 9 eggs were in the nest yesterday.
I...
Seven of the eight survived, 6 males and one female. The other eggs turned out to be laysan teal hybrids. Now I have nine male Pintails and three females. All three females want to pair up with siblings. I am trying to seperate the older males from the females. Has anyone had any luck...
Thank you for the link. It's one year later and I did build a couple more pens to keep birds seperate. I did not ever see the Mallards going after the Pintails. The new pens have plenty of cover for the birds to hide their nests in. Yesterday one of the Pintails laid its first egg ever. I...
I had 8 Pintails hatch about 10 days ago and two are smaller than the rest and one has not grown much at all. When they drink the 2 run backwards shaking their heads (mostly the smallest one) and the small one usually falls over. The small one is also completly bald now on the top of its head...
If they are under 6 weeks old I would guess that it is the buyers responsibility.
If they are older birds I would not buy them.
Most of the Mallard ducklings that I have seen out here in feed stores have the right hind toe removed.
I did visit one large gamebird hatchery that was removing the...
I will try to remember who it was that was willing to sell just males. You might post this in the ornamental section to see if anyone can figure out why your birds died.
Thanks BB. I have 4 domestic mallards but I keep them separate during the spring. I have a female Pochard, male Mandarin, and a few real mallards. I have let them free range during Spring and Summer during the day but that hasn't worked so far.
I bought the eggs from 3 different clutches...
I have 2 pair of 3 year old Northern Pintails. So far they have not nested. Does anyone have experience with these birds? Why are they not interested in nesting. Thanks.
