Hi!
I kept 15 chickens this year, 4 roosters and 11 hens (out of 26), and I was thinking of ordering another batch for next year.
However, we raised this year's batch in the bathroom until they were old enough to go outside, and that was incredibly tough to clean up once they'd left. I'd...
I asked this somewhere else, but I think it was a thread no one was looking at:
We have a black Ameraucana hen, and I think a blue-wheaten Ameraucana rooster. They came from Sand Hill, and I ordered them as "Ameraucanas/Easter Eggers", so I'm not sure whether he's careful about the genetics in...
On the same general subject, I have a black Ameraucana hen, and I think a blue-wheaten Ameraucana rooster (he's gold with some blue around his neck and back).
I really like him and his color (I am not showing chickens, though I might someday), and I don't want to kill him when I cull the flock...

Now I have a toddler and we FINALLY got the chickens this morning (and 3 alpacas a few weeks ago)!
We ordered them from Sand Hill Preservation Company (where we also get 50% of our garden seeds and our sweet potatoes).
We got...
(this may sound stupid but) if you have the rooster in with the hens you can still sell the eggs for food? Is there any way of making sure your customers won't end up eating baby chicks by accident? I had thought that's why you'd candle them, but the more I read the more it seems like candling...
Hi!
I'm not quite a chicken owner yet, but I'm planning to get them this coming spring. My husband and I have been working on turning our 8.5 acres into a self-sufficient farm for the last three years. So far it's just a really big vegetable garden and some pasture.
I have some farming in my...
