Sold to me as "our last 7 hens" from the LFS.

The six of them look like barred rocks. I will say some of them have really boy-like faces though. You will know in a week or two after they start to feather out more. The males will have much more white than the females on their wings and body.

Brinsea Ovation 56 with bad turner - any fixes?

HI, I did contact customer service. They want me to take a video of the turner turning and send it to them. Everything is installed correctly. The incubator currently has 56 eggs in it so it is a bit difficult to get in there and mess with it with all the eggs in there. Thank you.

    Are they cockerels?

The first one looks like a pullet. The rest look like cockerels. I'm not familiar with your breeding or coloring though.

Brinsea Ovation 56 with bad turner - any fixes?

I have Brinsea Ovation 56 eco Incubator that was purchased less than 2 years ago. It worked fine for the first 3 hatches, then the turner stopped working. It will turn the racks a little bit, but does not flip them over to the opposite side like it is supposed to. It seems like the turner...

    Incubating against the odds...

As for handling, it was mentioned before that hand carry oils and other contaminants that can kill the chick. The candling process can cause the egg to heat up too much. I don't think my light puts out that much heat, but some of them do. Picking up the eggs can cause damage due to sudden...

    Incubating against the odds...

Pretty much. I don't mess with them. No need to candle more than once a week anyway.

    Incubating against the odds...

Just my two cents - the more you handle the eggs while they are developing (especially during the first week of incubation) the greater your chances will be of damaging the developing chick. I never mess with my eggs during the first week aside from turning them or adding water to the...

Why Do All My Copper Marans Abort?

Marans eggs lose moisture more slowly than regular white, brown or blue eggs. I usually have better luck incubating older eggs that have already lost some moisture, or keep the humidity lower during the first week of incubation. Eggs should lose 5% of their weight each week until lock down...

Comment by 'ForrestGump' in article 'Should I Have My Chicks Vaccinated for Marek's Disease?'

Thank you for writing up the facts about Marek's vaccine. Many of us get so tired of people thinking the vaccine gives birds the disease. It does not as the vaccine is a Turkey virus that creates antibodies for the chicken form of the virus. Again, great job.

    I killed my baby’s Turkeys

It happens. All incubators are different and errors happen. Sorry you lost your babies. It is still early in the year - you can try again!

    Broad Breasted vs Heritage

Heritage turkeys are the best. They are very social, so make sure you have at least two. They are noisier than chickens, and a lonely turkey baby will make so much noise that it will drive you nuts. I tried to raise a poult with chicks (the other poults were killed by a predator so there was...

Were sold as BCM but I’m not sure?

It looks like a typical black copper Marans chick. They don't all have feathered legs. You'll have to wait a few months to see how is feathers out.

    Chicken Death

It could have been anything. She could have eating something toxic, or a foreign object. It could have just been her time. A lot of the hens that are high egg producing breeds don't live that long. I've had some plymouth rock hens that died around a year old. Same with rhode island reds and...
