    Deciding between Roosters (Input needed)

I love the copper eggs, so the Maran gets my vote to keep providing of course you want to breed him. I saw a youtube video about aggressive roosters. You can search for aggressive roosters to find it. The guy had a rooster chasing his kids and wife. What he did was catch him and hold him to the...

    Pullet or Cockerel?

I am not an expert by any means. I would think that by now if it was a rooster, then it would have a nub on the leg that is the beginning of a spur. Or it will crow again and you will know for sure.

How do I free range my chickens with a Fox in the woods??

We use the portable electric net fence. A little expensive at first. We love it because we can control where the chickens roam and they get moved every week or so. Has taken care of all ground preditors. My thinking is that you have to train the preditors that chickens are not a free meal and...

    Hawk Help Needed

We have problems with hawks in the Winter when they are hungry. I noticed that crows do not like hawks in their territory and will run them off. It has taken a while, but we encourage the crows by leaving out peanuts. They now nest near us and they help deter the hawks. Not 100%, but it helps...

We have done 2 things to keep hawks away. First I feed peanuts to the crows to keep them around our property. I have seen crows gather up and chase hawks away. I also put up cheap plastic pinwheels every five feet along the fence line. It seems to help reduce hawk fly overs. Our next predator...

Should I introduce chicks to broody hen?

Also I would say you will know immediately if she wants them. They will start peeping about being cold and she will call them to her. Hens will sit up a bit to allow chicks to fit.

Should I introduce chicks to broody hen?

Give it a try! I had a Leghorn that was broody and I had her set on fake eggs until my 35 chicks arrived. She took all 35. Hen raised chicks are great. She keeps them warm and calls them to her. She watched over them and would not let them go outside until they were old enough. She shows them...

    Attaching Hardware Cloth to Metal

I like your thoughts on 1/4 or 1/2 inch hardware cloth as snakes can definitely get through chicken wire. Instead if cutting off the 10" try over lapping.

    Mulberries

Oh well good to know. I guess I should have suspected that after the dog expelled purple. I really hope they keep the area cleaned up for the dog's sake.

    Mulberries

We tried wine too, but it seems that takes more skill. There we so many that we finally had to freeze them.

    Mulberries

We did just that last year before w had chickens. They make a pretty good cobbler too.

    Mulberries

We have several mulberry trees growing wild on the property. I was wondering if it is ok to let the chickens eat all they want? I know the dog likes them but the results are not a pretty shade of purple if she eats too many. I am hoping the chickens keep them cleaned up enough that the dog can't...

    Will broody hen adopt chicks

Yes, maybe. This is my dumb luck story. We raised our first batch of chicks in a tool shed that we could heat and was secure. A year later we ordered 35 more chicks and just after placing the order one of my hens went broody so I started researching. We did most things against advise because of...
