5 week old, could have sworn was a hen because of the poof.
Noticed it's been sparring a lot with my Silkie. It has horns above is beak too.

Lol! I'm so excited! And I'm too impatient to try a germination test so I figured I'd just do a small batch and see if it would take :D I went ahead and started my second batch, hopefully everything works out. Thank you for all your help!
So I thought I researched enough but guess not. *hides*
I went to a feed store an hour away and picked up a 50 lb bag of barley to grow fodder. Once I came home I realized I didn't ask if it was pesticide free. So I called and the store owner asked me
"Did you buy planting barley or feeder...
That kind of depth would be overflowing from the sides of my run. If all I can do is pine shavings and grass clippings will that even be enough to not smell?
Yes ma'am! Thank you. So deep litter is okay for hot weather? And where could I find wood chips we don't have any saw mills or anything around here. Benefits of small town living Haha
On deep litter someone recently posted on a FB group she was doing it in Austin, tx and said the smell was fowl. Then someone else said they don't recommend deep litter for hot climates.
I'm torn!
For run I was thinking of sand--I live in south Texas and during summer can get up to 100 The coop has pine shavings from TSC. What are rice hulls? I'll have to look those up.
By covered do you mean a roof? Both runs have a roof :)
I'm going to stick with 4 birds :) I didn't think all of them would survive based on all the horror stories here on BYC lol. My friend does have a huge ranch though and more than enough space to accommodate my extras.
Sorry I got all sensitive on y'all
Also, right now I'm extremely confused about what to put in my run. I read sand was great and then someone posted that sand is the most awful thing. I read straw harbors mites but then I read it's the best thing. lol it's all so confusing!
I've been reading up on chickens for over a year now...
I wasn't saying you were being a giant ol meanie, I'm super sensitive (it's an awful character trait) lol. I appreciate all the feedback, truly.
I can see how my original post was confusing when I mentioned how many the coop was said to hold. We do plan on free ranging when we are home and in...
Im unable to free range in our yard everyday because of hawks that we have around here, which is why we added the extra 8 ft run. Is that not enough for 4 hens?
