I just want to express my thankfulness for the this website and its member forums. I have learned so much and gotten so much help... it is just ridiculous. Every time(no exaggeration) I have had a problem or potential problem with my chickens, I have received invaluable help from this website...
Well, thanks for putting my mind to rest about the chick who is feathering out slower than the rest. I appreciate your responses
What about the bird that is growing slower... can you guys see that it is significantly smaller than the other birds?
this first picture shows the chicken (the big black one in the middle) which is normal sized but the some of the feathers are staying pin feathers and it doesn't seem to be feathering out as quickly as the others. Also, you can see the smaller chick which is still fuzzy and is nestled below the...
Thanks for the responses.
They are eating Purina's Start and Grow medicated feed. In the last week I have also let them be outside (in a caged area so they can peck at weeds and grass and bugs and stuff).
The two chicks are actually not at the bottom of the pecking order in the group of...
I hope I am posting this question in the right spot.
Problem:
Two chicks which seem to have genetic issues
Background:
For the first time ever, I tried my hand at incubating and hatching eggs that I bought from a lady who said they were all Orpington (blue, black, lavender, buff, and white)...
I bought orpington chicken eggs for my first go at incubating and hatching. Had a very low hatch rate and now have five baby chicks that are all just a couple hours apart from one another (they all hatched out in about 5 hours).
Now we are at day 13 and one of the chicks looks like it is...
I just eggtopsied for the first time.
Oh, I am not looking forward to doing that! The book I use, Storrey's Guide to Raising Chickens, says that you should so that you become familiar with what goes on during the hatches, so I am going to when I have waited long enough to be convinced they are...
@ Mmmaddie13: You should keep me posted too. I am glad that there are other people going through this... kind of nerve wracking and little depressing. Who knew hatching baby chicks would be such an emotional roller coaster???
So, I bought 24 eggs. I candled them at day 16 and removed the eggs that had obviously nothing in them. I was down to 18. Day 20, 5 babies hatched out and one pipped but has done nothing since. The rest of the eggs are sitting in the incubator still.
I had to open the incubator to remove...
I just had my second child last September, and not to trivialize the miracle of human birth, but waiting for these eggs to hatch is just about as nerve-wracking. Maybe it is because our bodies do all the work, but with the incubators there is so much that could go wrong.
I had hatch day dreams last night and they consisted of various nightmares about drowning the chicks, drying them out, etc.
Sort of unrelated to the original concern, but I am so relieved that I am not the only one obsessed enough to have nightmares about something going wrong with a hatch! I...
