Sorry, Pacific. I just found your comment. The coop is still working out great after these past couple of years. We've made a few minor adjustments and renovations but nothing major. It's been a great learning experience and I've actually done some seminars and speeches on Urban Chickens. My...
The story of our urban coop...
We originally planned to save up and pay a builder to construct the coop based off of some plans that I had bought and many that I had found online. I was going to incorporate a lot of the ideas I learned about here. For some reason however I abandoned this and...
I wanted to share a great gift idea for all chicken lovers. A new illustrated short-story book about Tango, my "foster hen" who was found in the Meijer parking lot (a big-box grocery chain here in Michigan) last December. The story book was created and illustrated by my Mother-in-law and...
Hello to all fellow BYC'ers! I'm happy to announce that we're hosting our 2nd annual Traverse City Coop Loop, Urban Chicken Coop Tour. This year we'll be hosting the tour on May 21st from 11am till 2pm at various downtown Traverse City urban coop locations.
Last year we had a phenomenal...
Here is my solution that I posted up on my blog. It has not failed me yet using a 2gal. water bucket and nipple watering system.

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :
:Would the aquarium heater work on a 5 gallon bucket? That's how much water I go through in a day... ?
They make a higher wattage version for larger gallon aquariums. I'd go with that option for a 5 gal. bucket. I believe the 25 watt version is the one you're looking for.
Glad I could help a few people out. For a relatively low cost item it's a perfect fit for those of us who use nipple watering systems with enclosed buckets. I have the benefit of providing continual fresh water without the worry of icing, no added condensation in the hen house from traditional...

I'd highly suggest a stuffed animal around the same size of your hen to snuggle with. I'd also suggest a large mirror and a parakeet toy that hangs down like a bell or something along those lines for those occasionally stimulating/interested moments she can have.
Good luck! Sick chickies makes...
Thanks everyone. It was a pretty nice surprise for us and for our guests. I think out of 10 eggs I cracked that morning we got 15 or 16 yolks. Ha ha! I wish I had a good way to weigh the egg to but maybe next time. As far as the egg size though, it would fall into the large category but didn't...
My girls have been laying now for a couple of weeks and today we were doing a big breakfast for some friends who had stayed over. I had about 4 double-yolkers and then one TRIPLE-yolker. It was a highlight this morning for sure! It came from a normal sized egg as well. My girls are awesome!
Enjoy!
My 5 hens are now 21 weeks old going on 22 and we believe all but one is now laying.
Yesterday after getting home from work my wife and I stepped out of the garage to be greeted by our girls as they always do when they see us. My wife opens the coop and gets our one and only Easter Egger out...
I have (2) Black Australorps but they are developing at different rates. One had a severe case of wry neck and took about 2-3 weeks of treatment to pull out of it. The other hen shot up in development however far past the rest of my girls all of the same age in size, wattle development, and comb...
Everyone has some great comments and I support each person's right and decision to do with their flock as they must in situations like this. As for me and my wife... this picture pretty much sums it up.
Don't give up! I've had enormous success using 2 nipple water system buckets for my urban flock of 5 hens. I have a 2 gallon bucket outside in the run and another 2 gallon bucking inside the coop house. I was also expecting a long "training day" session for my girls since they didn't get...
Couple of questions from someone who just started getting eggs this week. Thanks for your patience on these...
Look like most of you do not wash or suggest that if you "do" wash you do it in water that is warmer than the egg. I was just using regular slightly cold water so thanks for the tip...
I have never heard of this until right now and it's got to be one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. Thank you so much for posting those really greats pics. So often we read someones story but cant quite connect to it because there are no pics. I was hoping that wasn't the case with...
