    Welsummer Sexing

Great info, thanks. I knew they ended up with different colored plumage, just thought the male was taking a while getting there. Did not know about the black chest, that would have been a dead giveaway a while ago! Should have done more research on sexing these when I got them! Welsummer...

    Welsummer Sexing

Got two welsummer chicks in Feb 2017, requested one pullet and one rooster. As they grow (20 weeks now) they look nearly identical. By now, I assume it should be obvious, but I am no expert. I believe I might have two hens, please confirm or deny. Nearly the same size comb (one very slightly...

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Been stalking this thread for a while. So appreciative of all the pictures and advice from all the experts. As for my question: Farty Marty or Batty Betty???? 7 week old EE. Specifically chosen (out of 5 other sexed EE pullets from hatchery) because he had an even coloring and no...

    Connecticut!

I need some expert advice. I went to a local feed store and they didn't have the conventional unmedicated chick feed I usually buy at TSC/agway. Instead the guy working there said the bag in the picture below was the same. And I bought it after he assured me it was ok for chicks. Now I'm...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

yes i see your picture now. love the side by side comparison! (or obvious non-comparison, in your case!) glad you ended up with one of each anyway. its so surprising how many people say their feed stores have mislabeled or made some big mistakes with chicks (mixing them up or even not putting...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

what a good looking crew! i have a question... do your black australorps have muffs/cheeks? the reason i ask is i got a "mystery chick" meyer's meal maker and everything about it says it's a black australorp EXCEPT it has little fuzzy cheeks like an EE. Of course I've been searching pictures...

Buff Orpington 3 week old chicks- both pullets or one of each?

thank you for posting this whole thread, with updates and pictures. I have 5 BOs and am scrutinizing their various feather patterns because they are coming in differently. (just what you had, different tail feathers, some pointing up some down, some sharp feathers and some fuzzy just like...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Stalking... uh I mean... reading this older thread today to look for any tips/tricks I missed. Love your seabright's attitude.. ha. I have a question about something you mentioned. What do you mean by "handling training technique"? I tried a search of this thread (although have read most of...

Announcement April Fools 2016 - New Development: Chicken Feed That Changes Egg Shell Color!

my thoughts exactly. some people work hard to get a "natural variation" in colors for their egg collections. So now when we sell eggs at the farmer's market, some will be labeled, "naturally colored eggs" and "artificially colored". Hmmm

    Normal or Problem?

thank you for asking this question to the forum!!! I was just perusing the site and forums for this question myself. Good pictures (is that weird to say of excrement photography?) actually very informative. My chicks are 2 weeks and were having the burnt orange pudding poop you mentioned and i...

    Connecticut!

Thank you! Yes I just joined. That person doesn't have any left. She sold out in just a few days! Seems like ct is chicken crazy! A few of the people at the local feed stores said this year they just can't keep enough chicks in the stores.

    Connecticut!

This would be perfect, if only they could be sexed. If we did wait for 5-6 week olds, would that be too late to mix them in with the chicks we have now? Would we have to introduce them as if integrating grown flocks? Lee

    Connecticut!

Well well well, as fate may have it, the place we were going to get chicks from sold out this past week! I called several other local feed and farm stores and the only ones available are day olds at TSC in Guilford and Old Saybrook... I have been reading reviews, and most are terrible. Poor...

Mixing chicks of different ages in brooder, can it be done?

We have 7 chicks in a good size brooder, they are now 10-11 days old. Currently using Brinsea Ecoglow brooder/warmer. We are regretting not getting a few more and were toying with the idea of going out and getting 3 or 4 more which are 5-6 days old. What are your opinions? Will the older ones...
