yeah, you dont need to tell me ;-) and :-(... but I'm going to fencing in about 1/2 acre area... I think I'll just have the HT fence up and then shut them in at night.
that's too bad... we have had some winter weasel problems, although no summer weasel problems... I'm not sure what can keep a weasel out in the summer time, unfortunately, and hopefully we don't have that problem.
ping! I'm reviving this thread since I am planing to have a similar situation - some ducks + geese together around a small pond. I have read of some success using only HT wire with several strands up to 48" and spaced more closely together towards the bottom.
I'm most concerned about the...
Just picked up this chicken to keep our other Red Star company after the unfortunate death of Henny Penny. The owner didn't know the breed, and we had no idea either, even after scouring the breed list here on BYC and on other website. Any ideas?
Well, sad news. We had to put Henny Penny down. A couple days ago she was looking in very bad shape - very swollen abdomen and her feathers were all wet. Apparently she couldnt even make it up the stairs to roost the night before and got rained on. Poor thing. We tried to get fluid out of her...
No very big changes either way in the past few days, will have to see how things keep progressing. I'm still hesitant to drain her, since I definitely don't want to cause further damage. anyway, thanks for all your advice, Cynthia!
today she's still more or less the same - able to walk around a bit during the day, but still sits down on the grass for a lot of the time too. at least she's well enough to make it up to roost at night.
update on Henny Penny:
Last night she couldnt make it up the stairs to roost, so we brought her inside to sleep in a box. We kept her in the dark about 2 hours longer than daybreak, figuring more sleep would help her. This morning she seems a bit more chipper, standing up straighter and making...
The needle was 22 gauge - smallest they had. It was also at room temp as the directions said. I think it was just as you said - lots of internal pressure. I picked her up while my wife injected her, and I had to squeeze a little bit to keep her wings and legs in control - could have been a bit...
I just gave her the injection - about 0.8 ml of Norocillin brand penicillin from Southern States. The directions said to push in the needle, pull on the syringe to make sure no blood comes out, then push in the meds. We tried doing that and she broke loose, then immediately went limp. We caught...
about how far into the breast should I go with the needle (and what gauge needle?)? I don't want to poke anything important!
also, I just finished reading about your poor Ivy. ugh, what a horrible thing to go through, all those ups and downs. poor thing.
Cynthia - I've been reading those threads you linked to. I think i'll try penicillin, but is there any danger in giving it to her on the offchance that she *isn't* infected?
thanks for the reply. I wondered about egg binding - it seems that common symptoms for that are a droopy backside, lack of poop, and loss of appetite - and that egg binding can kill within days. This has been going on for months and she isn't droopy and poops fine. could it still be egg binding...
Hi All!
My 2 year old Red Star hen was once a wonderful layer. At about 6 months old she was attacked by a racoon or dog, but recovered quickly and laid very well afterward. Around last fall she went into what must have been her first molt and it was quite heavy. She has not laid since. She...
