What is this? Found under the roost.

Thanks. There's one with a little poop on her hind end, but that's the only guess. I have 5 two year olds and only one is laying regularly. Frustrating.

What is this? Found under the roost.

Oh my gosh! I spoke with a few friends with chickens and no one knew what this was. Thank you so much for the information. I don't know which hen it is. They all act peppy and all are eating well. None are overweight. The USA Browns are wirey hens. I got them from TSC.

What is this? Found under the roost.

I should add I have two year old ISA Browns and 7 year old hens too. After getting 4-5 eggs this winter, we are down to 1-2 now. They all look and act perfectly fine.

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

So--it's now October 21--and I'm happy to report Lace has been integrated into the flock with 100% success for a week. It was a gradual process, but it all paid off. Happy hens. :-)

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

Lace went into the run today! She was talking to every hen--esp the bigger Australorps. It didn't happen until late afternoon. When I checked on her, she was moving into the silo room, ever so slowly. lol Hubby helped me cover the tractor in case of rain tomorrow, so Ramona can hang out in...

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

A week? Yikes. Ramona is in the tractor--in the shade. Lace is in the coop--and she seems perfectly fine with the four others. But she will not venture outside, even with Ramona not there. I'd have to think on where to put Ramona at night. I can move the tractor to different spots...

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

And--Ramona attacked her again in the coop in the late afternoon. Thankfully I was there. I watched from outside the coop (ours is a bubble in a barn and has hardware cloth across the top) to see if she'd behave. She didn't. I was in there when it started, so she only got a feather, but she...

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

Thanks for the replies. So it's been an interesting morning. I headed out at 5:30 so I could get horses done before hens would move. lol I spent 90 minutes straight--then have made 412 visits since. ;-) Lace came down from roost, but when the other five scrambled to the run for the handful...

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

Thank you Eggcessive! That is great advice. I like the idea of putting the bully in a cage if needed. It's been less than a week, maybe three days out--I honestly forgot what day this started. The rabbit cage she was in was in the coop all late afternoon to evening--and all night. We have...

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

Hi ChickNanny. Thanks for your reply. I just came in from tucking hens in and Lace was acting unhappy to be in her cage. "Mama! Let me out, it's time to roost!" The other five were already up, so I held my breath and let her out--hoping she knows best. And darn if she didn't fly right up...

Sick Hen, Friend Hen Helping Her

My hen was just sick too. I posted a few minutes ago about how to get her back into the flock. From her symptoms I thought she could be egg bound, so just in case I put her in a warm Epsom salt bath--just about 2-3 inches deep. She melted into it. She seemed utterly content. I left her in...

How to put hen who is now well back with flock?

Hello! I am grateful this forum is here. A hen, Lace, started getting ill several days ago. I watched her closely and finally removed her from the flock. She started in a rabbit cage in the coop so others could see her. As she got better, I had her in the chicken tractor so she could be in...

They were laying, added light, now there's much fewer laying happening

One dozen less eggs last week. Bummer. We'll have to buy some. And, in my stupor from being sick, I forgot to open the door to the run yesterday. Thankfully I was home earlier than usual. Sigh.

They were laying, added light, now there's much fewer laying happening

Ooo--I can get some steal wool--thanks for that. The stones always block--but they find another place to try. I noticed they were all working later and later with laying, so I first thought they were making a switch to mornings and that set some back. but a rest period sounds good.

They were laying, added light, now there's much fewer laying happening

Rats--ewwww. I see where a mouse or rat get into the coop-- much smaller hole than the chipmunks--and I'm blocking them daily. We have a cat who is a great mouser--but mice get into our hay mow in the upstairs of the barn. But, the mice only get into the coop at night when there are no eggs...

They were laying, added light, now there's much fewer laying happening

Thanks for both your replies! No one is molting yet--no extra feathers around. They don't have access to the inside of the while barn--just the coop we made them. I thought about hidden nests--and there really aren't many places to hide one, especially now that they've scratched up most the...

They were laying, added light, now there's much fewer laying happening

Six hens--7 months. We've been getting 4-6 eggs a day--usually 36 a week. We decided to add supplemental light--just two strands of Christmas lights to make their day at least 13-14 hours long. It's very soft--I even have to turn on the other bulb in there to clean. Plus--our coop is a bubble...

    The supplemental light debate

I found this post on a search for supplemental lighting. My 6 hens just got up to laying well--they are about 25 weeks. I don't want egg production to go down yet. ;-) So--for this year I am thinking about putting a light in a timer for keep them laying. Next year I'd not add it until after...
