I have had two successful hatchlings with broody hens. Both were some what accidental where the hens starting sitting and after being unable to get them to stop I let them sit eggs I felt had a good chance of being fertile. Both times I left them in GP for first couple of weeks. I lost an egg or...
I was very tempted to do autopsy but the kids would of been totally upset with the idea. They buried her quickly after finding her right next to our first buff orp that passed last fall. And yes the chick is great and helps tremendously to take their minds off of the loss. Hoping the rest hatch...
Well we had great hope for our Blackie. She was roaming with the flock daily, eating, drinking, and even roosting on the pole next to her best friend Buffy. She went into to the outside run like normal yesterday and I noticed her laying around a lot. It was very hot so figured she was trying to...
Well seems like she feels some better. I’ve had her in a cage by herself since the other night and she’s eating, drinking, standing up normal, and walking normal. I didn’t get a chance to do internal exam yet but I her breast bone is slightly different than the big buff orp hen we have so think...
Thank you for the great info. I love my birds but also accept the circle of life and know that these things happen. I would rather be told the truth about the possible outcome so I am prepared for whatever may happen. When I get back home I will do an internal exam and check the breast bone like...
Thanks for the suggestions I’ll look up info on the other possible ailments. I thought possibly egg bound but since she hasn’t laid in awhile figured it may be something else. And yes I can post poo pic shortly.
Noticed our 3 yr old black sex link hen standing very strangely yesterday. She is sort of crouching down with her body almost upright. Her tail feathers are on the ground and drag when she walks. She stumbled a couple times over some rocks and used her wings to balance. She’s eating and drinking...
Yeah no mites on any of them. I’ve read the sizzle breed has a hard time regrowing feathers due to the extremely thick shaft on feathers. He has some that have trying to push through skin for a little while. But his rear has stayed pretty much bald and somewhat red like it’s irritated.
Our sizzle roo has had a serious issue with regrowing his feathers. Especially on his rear. We had a tom turkey in with him and all the hens including two hen turkeys. He was getting picked on so we removed the Tom and things seemed to calm down. His feathers still haven’t grown back and it’s...

Hope you can see better with these pics. Tried it by myself and they didn’t care for me trying to hold them still. Guess I missed the #6 one. Will see if I can pick it out and get a couple of it too. The last one #5 is the odd ball. How did...
So we had a silkie hen breed with our sizzle roo. The result was a beautiful bunch of 6 chicks. Born Dec. 15-21, 2017. So about 4 1/2 months now. None have started crowing or laying which I wouldn’t expect this early. One has feathering of sizzle and 4 have silkie feathering. Then there’s one...
I have and and have always had turkeys with my chickens. Two hen turkey and one Tom. The Tom was standing not 3 feet from the hawk as it sat on ground eating our silkie. Guess some may be more aggressive and chase a hawk. Mine stood there watching.
Saw the hawk again yesterday. Fired at tree below him. It flew off into the woods and didn’t see it again. We are keeping everyone on lockdown unless we are right out there with them. The owl is always sitting nearby but hasn’t made a move to attack. Hope it’s not just playing the long con...
Well we shot rifle in its direction and it flew out of sight. Haven’t seen it since so I’m hoping it got the message. Although there is still the owl that has been lurking in the field for a couple months. I know there are lots of rabbits and mice in the area so I hope it is happy with those...
