Fifth one hatched some time last night! It was out when we woke up this morning. We had left the others in and they were still doing great.
I haven't read that guide, I'll check it out! We've been hatching chickens for years, this is just our first try with geese.
Four of the five hatched by 10pm yesterday!
The fifth still hasn't made much progress, there's a small chunk of shell barely hanging on and we can see the chick moving around in its shell, but it hasn't zipped yet.
It is taking ALL my will power to leave the incubator SHUT and not 1.) help...
Update: one egg in the incubator exploded. We candled the others and saw some movement and today two of the eggs are moving a lot so we're hopeful they'll hatch soon!
Could that bad egg be why she abandoned the nest?
The three ordered goslings are safe and warm under a brooder.
We have a male and female French Toulouse pair that are four years old. They've never been successful hatching goslings but we had high hopes this year! The first year, one gosling hatched but by the time we knew, it was dead and she had abandoned the nest. No idea what happened. Last year she...
I saw some poop hammocks someone did and we will definitely be doing those this spring/summer!
Thank you so much! I think we'll try to clean them and get fresh bedding under her. They are French Toulouse. I wish I had 10 more, I love them!
Our female goose decided to sit on her nest before we had a chance to really clean the coop/bedding and her nest is right under the chickens' roosts I told my husband to kick her off but he thought she'd be ok and left her. It's been almost a week and today when he checked on her, he said it...
After two years with chickens and guineas, we added ducks and geese last year. We have 5 female Rouens, two males, and a breeding pair of French Toulouse geese. About a month ago, 4 of the five Rouens and our female goose went broody and they've been sitting consistently on their eggs since. I...
We've got more chicks!
We put 42 more eggs in the incubator late on the 19th, (removed 4 after candling) and we expected them to hatch late last night or early this morning. Friday morning we had one chick already! Saturday evening we removed her and put her in our tub with a heat lamp while DH...
Oh no, sorry - the gimpy chick died. Not a broody hen! I'd be even more upset!
Lucky was the chick I helped hatch and tried to baby since all the others died. She/he wasn't very healthy and normally we would have culled her but I ... was desperate to have just one chick live. So we put her in...
Yesterday after work, my husband and I set up a dog kennel in the shed part of the chicken coop, gave it a thick bedding of hay, and put a few eggs in it in preparation for moving a hen. We went out last night after dark and ... no hens in the nest boxes! It's like those ladies knew what we were...
We have two hens who have been sitting in our nest boxes all day, every day for a few weeks. We built the roll-away nest boxes Opa posted, so they don't have any eggs under them, they just roll away. I was thinking of moving one hen tonight after dark into a dog kennel with lots of hay, putting...
Looks like our late hatch chick, "Lucky," might make it after all. Her/his leg is even starting to straighten out. I feel bad that it's all alone though - could we try to slip it under one of our two broody hens tonight or tomorrow night? Do hens reject chicks that are a bit gimpy?
Can I ask a few questions about this setup?
What size heating pad and MHP "ribs" would we need for approximately 30 chicks? I'm hopeful batch #2 has a better hatch rate than this one.
Is this the kind of heat pad we could use...
I'll try to give as many details as I can :)
We have a 4x8 plywood brooder (2 feet high) that we put in our chicken coop. It was partitioned almost in half using chicken wire from our staggered hatches last year, so the 10 chicks had access to an area approximately 4x4. The heater was hung...
I'm curious if you're still using these and what you think now a year later. We recently purchased two of the 11x40 ones to use in brooder boxes out in our unheated chicken coop. We had 10 chicks hatch last week and we moved them out to the coop Friday morning. I checked on them just about every...
I had searched on the forums for people's reviews of the Sweeter Heater and it seems generally very positive, even with the rather high surface temps. Users even stated they used the heaters in very cold temperatures. I really thought this would be the best solution for our situation and what we...
Well I think they probably froze to death. This morning, my husband put a stone paver and a piece of wood under the Sweeter Heater, with the heater as low as we'd had it for the chicks. After an hour or so we went out to take temps with our baby thermometer. The surface of the heater read about...
