Review by 'Anonymous' in article 'Fermenting Chicken Feed: A Straightforward Method'

interesting and helpful. I am also interested in exploring fermenting Sicklepod leaves, as it is supposed to make a high protein feed. And we have a lot of Sicklepod weeds growing on our place.

    Nobody holds still for pictures

I rarely get or have pictures to share, so this is just a story. We have climbed to 34 hens and 1 rooster. Also switched to Sex-link breeds, the ones flagged as more heat tolerant. Turns out that RI Reds are better for cold weather than for hot weather, and since we are in So.GA, heat is a...

Are there anyways to deter foxes?

My husband took a different approach. We have a fox that visits our yard most nights, within sight of our 35 hens in their pen. However the fox also has to walk in front of my husband's swing and past the dog house/table feeding zone we have set up for 6 of our dozen barn cats. He took a...

    What is this animal?

Like the others said, Marmot, groundhog. They mainly eat veggies but also bird eggs, so check that your chicken eggs are not vulnerable. Also since they burrow extensively, double check that one of their tunnels has not compromised your fencing.

How to convert metal frame run to open-air coop?

Interesting reading your descriptions. Never had to deal with rats as a problem with our chickens and glad of it. But then again we have 8 permanent cats and 2 ferals on contant patrol of our yard. One of them "Oscar" patrols the outside of their fence daily. That may be why we only have...

How to convert metal frame run to open-air coop?

You don't state what predators you have to deal with. We have Dogs, Opposums, Snakes, Bobcats, Foxes, Raccoons, Hawks, Owls and Eagles. Hog panels and hardware cloth seem rather expensive. We used the large opening chicken wire for the top to keep birds and oppossums out. Used standard...

2 day chick has twisted leg

Named her Bink, but she did not make it. She did seem to be more comfortable, even making small chirring noises and eating and drinking a little. But she also had deformed wing, and likely some other issues. She died late this morning.

2 day chick has twisted leg

DONE. I am shaking more than she is. After 4 ties to get bandage on her, I came up with this oversized diaper. she did not cry out. I kept the cut down on the lower leg and the bleeding was minimal. The bulk seems to bother most. wont need splint. hoping little knee cap will protct bottom.

Feed Store Chick with one splayed leg, Slipped tendon?

Perhaps her personality is more like my brothers. He didn't like the his cast either. And no way would he use a sling. Just do the best you can with that lil problem chick. Animals seem to heal faster than humans, escpecially baby ones, guess that might have to do with them being in a fast...

2 day chick has twisted leg

Little bird is still alive, so decided to compare the list of criteria to see if she was worth saving: A lethargic chick -- She is NOT lethargic A chick that can’t maintain body heat - she is only 3 days old, have to provide heat anyway A swollen, or infected leg -- knee is swollen, that is...

Feed Store Chick with one splayed leg, Slipped tendon?

I bought some from poultry farm. They send an extra one. Good thing, cause one chick has a damaged leg. They suggested using a hair tie and running it thru a short piece of drinking straw then loop it over each leg to help pull the swaddled leg back in. Didn't work for my bird, as she has...
