    PVC roosts

It is too slick, but I have heard that you could wrap it with strips of carpet and fasten with zipties. This gives them a surface that is grippable and they'll be able to sleep well.

    What killed my chickens?

    Did you see any tracks?

    8 x 10 shed coop

I would take the top shelf off, leave the shelf supports in, and use them to install a roost on. I took used landscape timbers, ripped them in half with a table saw and laid the rounded side up as a roost. Also, maybe convert the lower shelf into a few nesting boxes...

    My first coop

8x8 wouldn't be too heavy if you did a cattle panel tractor.

Should I attach coop to existing storage barn?

I don't see any reason to not do it. Just make sure that there are no holes in the wall that is shared by the coop and the barn. Those birds produce ALOT of dust that'll get all in the barn if you're not careful

    What do you think?

If you plan on totally free ranging, then you might be ok for just 4 birds. But if you're not sure, then you might want to spring for something more predator proof, or at least build a predator proof run with that coop as part of it. But honestly, that coop doesn't look like a great buy. You...

    What do you think?

Looks small and vulnerable. What kind of flock are you looking to have? Numbers? Size? Free range?

?? about space:hen requirement for RARELY USED run (beneath coop)

You'd probably be fine to leave the access to that open all the time, if it's predator proof. Once the sun starts to go down, they'll go up in the coop and roost on their own.

What size coop is big enough for 10 chickens?

That actually sounds pretty tight. Around here on BYC, all I've ever heard is 4 sq ft/chicken in the coop and 10 sq ft/chicken in the run. (These numbers are for standards) Less than that and I've heard you start to have problems with the birds pecking at each other and so forth...

    Chicks at TSC

Quote: Very nice! So, with sex links you you can tell sex by color, right? Just so I know in the future, what's the differences in color between male/female BSL?

    Newbie with breed questions

I was thinking Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks. BO are very cold weather tolerant due to thick layers of feathers, and BR are also, but might be slightly better layers. Both are very docile.

    Modified Dog House for Coop?

What kind of dog house are we talking about? Standard wood frame? Igloo? Most of them would be great for only 4 birds.

What's been hanging around my coop?

I think of that dog in that movie, "Up", randomly yelling, "SQUIRREL!!", and then going about his business

construction of my pen/coop, suggestions welcomed

Ron, what a great coop and run. Good job. Not sure if you've done the roosts in the coop yet, but being a gardner you might want to look at this: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=2427. Look at "inside the coop". Those roosts are over hardware cloth (and they don't walk on...

    Chickens: Pets Or Food?

Isn't this the beauty of chickens? If you want, you CAN have both. My dogs have never contributed to the family the way chickens do... eggs, meat, insect and weed control, fertilizer for garden, and oh yeah, joy and entertainment.

How do YOU store your chicken feed???

i get free 5 gallon buckets (WITH lids) from the grocery store. The lids are watertight, and of course make it predator proof. (When I kept them in just the bags, I had a mouse problem) I dump one bag of feed into two buckets. It's a cheap way to store it and light enough to carry if I need to.

    Wanting Chicken Tractor Ideas!!

4 words: cattle panel hoop house. It's cheap, easy, and strong. And if you decide to not use it any more as a chicken tractor, you could easily convert it into a greenhouse. I have one, and it's awesome. It's 8'x10', and about 6' high at its peak, and I was able to build it for $100. I don't...
