It's been working great for me. I used a 3" 90° pvc elbow, which you can get from Lowes or HD. I cut the inside bottom portion of the elbow so the feed can flow down as the chicken eat it.
I leave my feed in a bucket where the chickens are free to eat whenever they want. I haven't noticed my chickens over indulging themselves. I do let my chicken free range for a few hours every day. They're more interested in that then the feed.

Definitely look into water nipples. They are great! It's much cleaner and no more water spills. I use a horizontal nipple that's hooked up to the side of a bucket. I clean and refill the bucket every 2 weeks or so. I leave it in the coop as well.. The summer gets pretty hot and humid here...
I think if you're planning to free range your chickens, then the run is fine. Having more run space doesn't hurt, especially on those day when they are confined due to bad weather.
