So you need quick and easy. Cats hate getting wet, what about a motion sensor activated sprinkler? Should only take a few minutes of your time to setup.
One of my hens just produced a weird membrane and yolk. Have never had anything but perfect eggs from these hens. The other hens layed normal eggs today. The only new situation is I introduced some chicks to the flock and for a few days the hens only ate the chick feed until I solved that...
Here's some research: this controlled study reported in the Journal of Wildlife reports that trapped and relocated raccoon fair no differently than native control raccoons trapped and released at the same site...
Not saying that trapped wildlife shouldn't be culled, but controlled studies have shown that relocated raccoons do just as well as non-relocated raccoons. They don't fall to predation any more than non-relocated raccoons, despite what many on this forum state. Not sure if this is true with...
It upsets me when I occasionally catch an opossum in the Dukes dog proof trap which I put out for the raccoons. Personally, I don't think opossum pose my chickens much of a threat, so I dislike having to kill the occasional one that I catch.
Well, MSDS for cement puts the LD50 (amount to kill 50% of rats dosed) at 2000mg/kg. If a rat weighs 0.5kg then you would need to feed each rat 1000mg of cement to kill 5 out of 10 rats. Since you have put out 600,000 mg there would need to be more than 600 rats eating the cement to bee less...
Sounds like a raccoon using its child like devil hands to do what they do. Your coop design as described won't keep them out. It sounds like you have a main coop, with more chickens? Hopefully it is more secure? Sorry for your loss.
I would get another quote. $600 is ridiculous for what should be an easy job. Find in independent trapper rather than a company, they should be cheaper. I hired a guy to remove an incredibly hard to catch red squirrel in the walls of my house. He charged me $100.
Skunks never paid me any problems. And I don't think they are smart enough to become trap shy and become "untrappable" by a neighbor if they felt so inclined to want to trap one.
I'd be surprised if a skunk could take down a full grown chicken. During the daytime. Not very bright those skunks.
I once caught a skunk in a cage trap. I carefully covered trap with tarp and propped door open. Came back 10 minutes later and skunk was sleeping. INSIDE the open trap...
As others said, raccoons are amazingly talented at getting into things and evading capture. Great ideas mentioned about different door options or modifications, but I would also set a Dukes dog proof raccoon trap to get rid of the bugger(s).
Assuming you got the large trap you would need roughly a 55 gallon drum to do this. But it is indeed an effective way to dispatch the critter if you are doubtful on the pellet gun.
Uggghhhh. I'm not clear on what happened? Did predator break into the run, then access the coop? Anyway, my bet is on raccoon. Those guys can dig. I just finished an apron on my setup, a 24" strip of hardware cloth that is laid on the grass and secured with 10" lawn staples. Super easy to...
