I have been lucky because none of my broodys have ever tried to attack me. Pearl, the one that just had babies was actually very sweet the entire time. She would draw blood on the other hens anytime they would come near her or the babies but never minded me. I think it depends on each chicken...
Yes, first time mama and she did great! She just turned a year old in May. We didn’t have a rooster at the time so that was my only option. I would do it again! 😊
I just recently did this and it worked beautifully. I went and bought 4 one-day old chicks and put them under her. She was kind of unsure in the beginning but within minutes, she took to them and she did awesome. Those were her babies. I actually did it in the middle of the day but some...
Thank you! I’ve just never had any of the other ones that I’ve raised develop the wattles and combs so early but I’m used to buff orpingtons and Easter eggers.
I have three sexed Ancona chicks that are nine weeks old and they don’t look like any of the other chicks I’ve ever had so I’m just curious, are they cockerels or pullets? They are looking very suspicious with all the redness but I have heard that they get their comb and wattles early similar...
I had a broody hen that had been sitting on unfertilized eggs for a couple of weeks. I would remove the eggs daily but she would always steal somebody else’s L O L. I finally bit the bullet and went to Tractor Supply and got her some babies. I was skeptical at first when I first put them...
Name: Grady
Age: 24 weeks
Breed: Cochin
He is a complete and total gentle and doesn’t mate with his girls in front of me. ☺️ He loves to be hand fed but always lets the girls eat first.
He’s a total gentleman to his ladies right now and he has 8 girls so I’m hoping that’s enough and that he maintains his good demeanor. I’m not sure when he mates with them because he never does it in front of me.
We recently took in a five month old Cochin cockerel. He is doing very well with my girls and although I haven’t seen him mating with them, I suspect that he is because it looks like we are starting to get fertile eggs. He is such a sweet boy and has already taken charge of his flock. My...
One more update on Derby! She is doing great and gets along with her chicken family so well! She is also able to get in and out of her little pool by herself now! Yay! I included a picture so that you can see the transformation that she has made in the last three weeks. She truly is a miracle.
Thank you everybody for your input I’m gonna go to tractor supply this afternoon and pick up some poultry dust and give that a try and if it doesn’t I may have to pull out the big guns, lol.
I have a mother hen that is still sitting in the nesting box with her babies at night even though they’re about five weeks old. I’m hoping they haven’t been getting stung. When I was cleaning out the box I put my hand in there today and it was covered in ants. Hurt very much, LOL!
I went out to clean my coop today and noticed that I have fire ants in my nesting boxes is there anything I can put it in there that will not harm my chickens?
