Yes the Lakenvelder and Vorwerk are two seperate breeds. What confuses people are these golden lakenvelders. A vorwerk should have a heavier build than a Lakenvelder and different type, and of course, color. (by our standards for color)

The ways I think you can start from the brooder is if you have birds that have weird things pop up like off leg color and combs and stuff like that. Also if you breed blue and just blue not black of a breed you can cull all of the black and splash chicks.
Here are some good examples...
I also want to add, if you want to improve a breed. You can do it with fewer birds. Just know how to cull and do not be afraid to do it. Cull from the incubator on. I can hatch out 100 chicks of a kind and within a month be down to half of that or less. Of those, I try to let grow out until...
Don't overlook what Saladin has already said, and other's have stated. If you have limited space, just keep one breed. And if you have lots of space, I'd still recommend just sticking with a few breeds.
Just my opinion.

I can't really think of any books that would help other than the standard of Perfection. there are some books written specifically on the Andalusian, but they aren't for children. If you want to look for them, they can be downloaded off of:

No, my birds originate from John Hayes (NY), some hatchery stock and I have a female from Matt Cauthorne (VA) that helped out with color.
Tom, Matt Cauthorne got his start from Chris D'Orgeix. And as far as I know, Fred and Chris didn't exchange eggs, but Fred did get a bird off of...

Yes, I was thinking to myself the problems that need worked on. The combs in the males. The combs on my females are decent. My old cock bird has a good chest on him and I am putting him in with the hens pictured here eventually. Right now the hens are with that cockerel. I think I...

I haven't as of yet ran into any problems with breeding blue x blue. I have read in old papers and books on the breed, and there are people who have raised them for 50 years or longer and that is all they have done is blue x blue. If you look at the other breeds, and everyone who...

I started with well marked birds and I also cull them pretty hard. I hatched 60 this year and of course about half were either Black or Splash. I don't keep either of them. Haven't seen the need to make any Splash X Black matings. The Blue X Blue matings produce well marked birds...

What are you talking about? There should be no tan color on penciled breeds. Pretty much they have three colors, steel gray, black pencilings and black on the tail and wing feathers, and also white lacing the feathers on the neck.

STOP!!!! For your Orps you NEED red eyed birds. The above was about Minorcas and Spanish that require a dark brown eye.
Well, Buff and White Orps are Red eyed. Black and Blue Orps are Brown eyed.
He is a Black. I hate everything about him. Hate the tail, hate the chest, he is...

It would be one box with all 5 birds sent express mail. Normally I don't put more than 4 per box, but it's cool enough right now that it won't hurt anything. The boxes are around $35 each and my best estimate is based off of what I've sent out over the last couple of months is $125 a...
