Favorite Hen Drowned to Death in Pond

So sad, I'm sorry you found her like that and it was so upsetting (I appreciate it would have been absolutely awful). RIP to your dearest.

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

Thanks Frazzemrat1, the feathers are more like the ones of the left in your picture from what I can tell. But I'm just a bit confused as to why one (they are both sibling apparently the same age) is growing wattles and a comb but the other isn't? What are your thoughts?

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

Thanks drumstick diva (I love your name by the way). I am beginning to think so too. Maybe a bit silkie like some people have suggested with some sumatra or Ayam Cemani. Do you think one of them is a roo?

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

I haven't noticed pointed feathers on him/her (I think they are more rounded) but will have a look more closely. Take your point that they aren't a factor on every chicken as some of the boys from certain breeds will have rounded feathers.

Thanks for your reply, do you have any idea what mixes they might be. We are super curious about it.

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

@Brahma Chicken5000, I thought so too (not silkie as much but see why you might think that) since the rest of the body is very feathered) but recognise the common traits, but with the polish,i definitely see her in there especially since he/she is completely black but with the hair tuft at the...

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

thank you, for your response, as much help as we can get, we really appreciate it. The second to last one you posted, very much looks like the one we are sure is a girl. There is definitely no red in any of them. Their feathers have a green tinge in the sun but as you can see the other one is...

He also has a bit of a wee mohawk so not sure which breed that is an indicator of. He/she is still very young so any advice would be most welcome.

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

Thank you, I'll try and get a better photo tomorrow. They were very timid when we first got them and over the last couple of weeks, they have become a bit more friendly so it has been difficult to try and get a good photo. I've got another photo here of the two of them. It is hard to see from...

Roo or hen? Sumatra? Two newbies and they are quite different - help

We have a flock of six chickens. Four of them are hybrid/brown shavers and we believe our two new ones are black sumatras (although my husband got them as a surprise for me and didn't really grill her about what they were, conditions etc). We never wanted a rooster, (we were told they were both...

You know you love your chickens when...

They new ones are beautiful, but very different. Our first two had been raised as pets from the outset by their former owners so were extremely friendly. These two are just a little bit more wary of us (and our incumbent president chicken), they came from a breeder - suppose they become more...

You know you love your chickens when...

This is my very first post, although I am a long time lurker, well not super long, we only got our chickens in June (they were my birthday present and I had wanted chickens ever since we moved out here to a rural lifestyle block over a year and a half ago). We started with two; they were both...
