I know NCSU has a Poultry Science department. Does anyone here know if they have any programs for local farmers? Do they do autopsies and the like? Would think with a bunch of students getting poultry degrees there may be opportunities for locals to benefit from it possibly. I just happen to...
Are there inherent traits of chickens such as laying ability, or temperament, etc. that are
more likely to be inherited from the rooster or hen?
Was wondering because we plan to have two or three different breeds of hens, but probably only one rooster at a time.
I am no chicken expert. I don't even have any yet. BUT this question is the same for domesticated chickens, dogs, even humans really. We try to create "natural" conditions for chickens in a pen or fish in an aquarium when they aren't in a natural situation. First off they've been selectively...
15x15=225 ft2, 225 divided by 5 = 45. If they have adequate run space outside, you could easily keep 36-50 in there.
You would need a big run. 4 or 5 square feet per bird inside and 10 square feet outside are recommended.
We don't have one yet. No chickens. I'm going to build it bombproof and call it the Biddy Bunker, or Fowl Fortress, or something like that maybe.
I like "The Bird Bunker."
"Fort Feather"
Bantams or silkies would be a good idea. (Disclaimer; I'm a newbie too, no chickens yet, but have been doing lots of research online to find out what I want to do with my flock when I get it) By all accounts silkies are great pets, and you can research bantam breeds and find out which are the...
Thanks for the info. Yeah I know they aren't rare or hard to find. Just want to get our first stock from a breeder where we can actually go see the birds and see what we're getting, and how the birds temperaments are in general. I've been in contact with them since that post, they seem to know...
I would love to start with a concrete foundation. Solves (or at least helps with) several potential problems for me. Clay soil (poor drainage) and wet weather plus lots of heat and humidity in summer. Still in the research phase. I plan to do just that if possible. I'll at least have a large run...
It says "I would place the southern house so that sunlight in the early morning and late afternoon will penetrate most of the interior and ample shade be given during the hot part of the day."
The "hot part of the day" here in summer is dawn until midnight, at least. There ARE NO cool times...
I don't have poultry books. Just you guys. I ordered several from amazon, but I'm working out of state and won't get to see them until I'm back home next month. I did read this in the Woods book linked to earlier. Chapter VII page 114 The Stoddard Southern House for Hot Climates:
"How should...
Thanks all for the advice.
Here almost all of our severe summer storms come from due west some from SW. They seem pop up out of nowhere in the hot months and can dump a hellacious amount of rain in no time. They pass quickly, and then the sun comes back out and it's like an outdoor sauna. In the...
