Buff #1 was let out of broody jail last night. She went out to do chicken things and then went to the normal roost and spent the night. This morning she is out and about. That was 4 days in broody jail. Now the other 3 need to stop. They are not happy in their jail.
They are all going to go into broody jail Gotta haul out the dog crates. I'm just mad cuz the leghorn and ameraucana aren't supposed to do this but at least I don't have 16 of them doing it! I feel bad for you @mixedbreeds
Yup, took a week in broody jail for the Buffs last year. Then they were fine for a few weeks, then back to being broody. I guess I will drag out large crate and put the leghorn and Ameraucana in there.
If I left them sit, would they eventually stop? Or do they sit there forever?
To increase my knowledge, why is it important to get them into broody jail as soon as possible to get them out of broody mode? If I wanted them to sit on eggs, shouldn't I just leave them sit until they abandon the nest?
I was watching the camera that I have in my coop. Buff who has been...
My chickens are absolutely driving me crazy. I have 8 two year old hens, 14 one year old hens and 1 year old rooster. The 2 Buff Orpingtons (currently 2 years old) went broody a couple of times last year when I put the chicks (the ones that are now 1 year old) in the coop. I put them in...
Would you mind if I butted into this thread? See the 90 degree angled toe on the first 2 pictures? My year old Welsummer rooster has the same toes. Is that normal? Seems kinda deformed to me
I give them (24 birds) a cup of scratch a day that also has meal worms and black oil sunflower seeds in it. When I have produce that is getting wilty, I give them that too. They love tomatoes, overripe bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe and frozen blueberries. They do not like oranges...
I sent him a link to this thread and he read it. He is going to lock them in the coop Sun-Tues and see what he gets for eggs. Also going to stop the wormer every 6 months. Thank you all for your advice. I'll keep you posted next week after the "lockdown"
I need to go to bed now as I have to get up at 3am to go to work. I'll get back on-line tomorrow to see what else you need to know or any suggestions for him. Thanks for your responses
He is in North Texas. He said the temps were not really hot this year, only got into the 100's 3 days. Temps now are in the 50's and 60's but the past 10 days have been in the 70's. About 80% of the area the birds roam in, is shaded.
He is giving them wormer (he's looking up the name) every...
I'm asking this for an internet friend of mine. He lives in TX and the chickens free range on 1.5 acres. He's walked all over and hasn't found any eggs hiding anywhere. The pullets are 8-11 months old. I've only had chickens for 2 years, so I'm not any kind of expert on this, plus I live in...
Do the alfalfa cubes go bad? Last winter I soaked some in water a gave them to the hens but I've got almost a whole bag left. I was wondering if I should toss them out or are they still good for this coming winter. They are stored in my basement
